From that day on, their encounters were different. Robin began to notice the cracks in John's façade- the way his hands trembled when he issued orders, the fleeting glances he cast toward his older brother's portrait in the castle halls.
And John, though still prickly and pompous, seemed to hesitate before calling Robin a 'filthy outlaw' or ordering the guards to capture him.
One evening, after yet another skirmish where Robin and his friends had stolen from the sheriff, prince john had cornered Robin near the edge of the forest. For once, he was alone- no guards, no blustering threats.
Just john, his shoulder stiff and expression unreadable.
"Why do you do it, Robin?" John asked, his voice quieter than usual.
"Why do you keep fighting me?"
Robin smirked, leaning casually against a tree. "Why? To help the people you keep stomping on with your ridiculous taxes, of course."
John flinched at the jab but pressed on. "Do you ever think about what it's like to be me? To have everyone expect you to be someone you're not?"
John tilted his head, studying the prince. This wasn't the usual john- the boy who threw tantrums when things didn't go his way. This was someone else entirely, someone real.
"Maybe," Robin said after a moment. "But you don't make it easy to sympathize, your highness."
John looked away, his face shadowed by the golden light of the setting sun. "I don't know how to change," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
Robin felt his defenses crack. Against his better judgment, he stepped closer, his usual smirk softening into something more genuine. "Maybe you don't have to figure it out alone."
For a moment, their eyes met, and something unspoken passed between them- a fragile connection neither of them had words for.
