The rabbit squirmed in my arms, its small body warm and trembling, but the movements were growing weaker. It wasn't trying as hard to escape now, and that made my chest feel oddly light. I smiled faintly as I cradled it closer, feeling the softness of its fur beneath my fingertips. This one was slightly larger than the rabbit Carlisle had brought me yesterday, its coat a soft, tawny brown. It was mine now, and unlike the others I'd held before, I had no intention of eating it.

Carlisle had taken the old rabbit away earlier, gently explaining that it was time to let it go. Instead, he'd handed me a fox to eat, which had already been killed, so I wouldn't have to harm it myself. It had tasted good, much better than the rabbit had, but I still preferred holding this one alive, feeling its warmth against me. The fox had been food. The rabbit wasn't.

"Are you going to name it?" Carlisle asked, his voice light as he watched me.

I shook my head quickly. Naming it felt pointless. It was mine, but it didn't need a name. It was warm and soft—that was enough.

"That's alright," he said with a nod, his expression calm. "I wanted to ask, though it's supposed to be quite bad weather tonight. I thought you might want to stay in my home, just for the night."

My body tensed immediately. The word home echoed in my mind, unfamiliar and unsettling.

"House?" I whispered, the word rough on my tongue. I wasn't used to speaking much, not even with Carlisle, though it was getting a little easier with time.

"Yes, my house," he said gently, tilting his head slightly as he studied my reaction. "You've not been with many other vampires, have you? And the ones you have met, well, I imagine they didn't settle down."

I shook my head slowly. I had come across others before, but they'd been nothing like him. They didn't stop to talk and didn't offer food or shelter. They were cold, dangerous, driven by instinct and hunger. Carlisle was different.

"My family and I have a home nearby," he continued. "I'd like for you to join us tonight. It's safe there, and you wouldn't have to worry about the weather."

I shook my head again, more firmly this time. The idea of being around more of them, more like him, was too much. I couldn't trust that if it was just Carlisle, maybe, but not with a group. No, I was fine here. I didn't need to go anywhere.

He sighed softly, his expression shifting into something I hadn't seen before. His smile, always calm and unshaken, turned sad, his eyes filled with a quiet disappointment. The sight made something twist in my chest, uncomfortable and strange. I didn't like that look on him.

"Are you sure?" he asked, his voice quieter now.

I nodded quickly, clutching the rabbit a little tighter. He smiled again, but it didn't quite reach his eyes this time.

"The offer is always open, if you change your mind," he said. "Our home is straight that way." He pointed into the distance toward the dense line of trees beyond the field. I followed his gesture with my eyes, memorising the direction even though I didn't plan to go.

I nodded again, wordless.

Carlisle straightened, brushing a hand through his golden hair as he glanced back toward the horizon. The sun was sinking lower, and the air was cooling with the promise of the coming storm.

"I'll see you soon, then," he said softly, his voice still kind.

I nodded once more, watching him turn and walk away, his movements as quiet and deliberate as always. The rabbit shifted in my arms, its little body pressing closer to mine, and I let out a breath I hadn't realised I'd been holding. The tension in my shoulders eased slightly as Carlisle disappeared into the treeline, leaving me alone again with the soft, warm thing in my arms.
