The following week passed in a flurry of work for Silvia. Managing her café chain meant endless meetings, spreadsheets, and taste tests. She had barely thought about Carlos since their impromptu coffee chat, though his easy confidence lingered at the edges of her mind more than she liked to admit.

By Friday, the group was ready to wind down for the weekend. Noah had proposed a dinner at one of their hotels—a sprawling property on the city’s outskirts that boasted a terrace with breathtaking views.

Silvia arrived just as the sun was beginning to set, the golden light casting long shadows over the lush grounds. She spotted Ricky first, leaning against a railing and chatting animatedly with Talia. William and Noah were at a nearby table, deep in conversation about the resort project.

“Finally!” Noah called when he saw her. “We thought you were going to bail.”

“I’m ten minutes late,” Silvia retorted, rolling her eyes as she joined them. “What are we drinking?”

“Something fancy,” Ricky said, holding up a glass. “The bartender said it pairs perfectly with sunset views and my unparalleled charm.”

“You’re insufferable,” Talia muttered, though her amused smile betrayed her.

Silvia was settling into the familiar rhythm of their banter when William stood up, his phone in hand. “Carlos just texted. He’s on his way.”

Silvia blinked. “Carlos is coming?”

“Yeah,” William said casually. “I figured it’d be good for him to meet more people outside of work. He doesn’t have much of a social circle here yet.”

“Oh, great,” Silvia said, her voice carefully neutral. She wasn’t sure why the idea of Carlos joining them made her heart beat faster.

---

Carlos arrived not long after, looking effortlessly put together in a simple white shirt and dark jeans. His warm smile as he approached the group was enough to instantly disarm any lingering awkwardness.

“Hey, everyone,” he said, his gaze briefly meeting Silvia’s before moving to the others.

“Carlos!” Noah exclaimed, throwing an arm around him as though they were lifelong friends. “Welcome to chaos central. Can I get you a drink?”

“Sure,” Carlos said, chuckling. “Whatever you’re having.”

“Bad choice,” Talia warned, raising her glass. “Noah’s taste in drinks is... questionable.”

Carlos glanced at Silvia, who couldn’t help but smile. “I’ll take my chances,” he said, his tone light.

As the evening unfolded, Carlos proved to be a natural addition to the group. He matched Ricky’s quick wit, navigated Noah’s relentless energy with ease, and even managed to coax a rare laugh from Talia.

Silvia observed quietly, nursing her drink as the conversation flowed around her. It was odd seeing Carlos in this context—relaxed, charming, and completely at ease with her closest friends.

“You’re awfully quiet tonight,” Ricky said, nudging her. “What’s on your mind?”

“Nothing,” Silvia replied, shaking her head. “Just tired.”

Ricky’s eyes sparkled mischievously. “Or maybe you’re distracted. Could it be our young actor friend?”

Silvia glared at him, though her cheeks flushed. “Don’t start.”

“I’m just saying,” Ricky teased. “There’s definitely a vibe.”

“There’s no vibe,” she insisted, though her tone lacked conviction.

---

As the evening wore on, the group moved to the terrace, where the cool night air was a welcome contrast to the warmth inside. Silvia found herself standing apart from the others, leaning against the railing and staring out at the city lights.

“Do you always escape to balconies?”

She turned to see Carlos approaching, his expression amused.

“Only when I need a break from Noah’s energy,” she said, smiling faintly.

Carlos laughed softly. “Fair enough.”

They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, the sounds of laughter and conversation drifting over from the rest of the group.

“You have a good thing here,” Carlos said finally, gesturing toward her friends. “It’s rare to find people you can trust like that.”

Silvia nodded, her gaze distant. “Yeah. They’re like family.”

“William talks about you a lot,” Carlos said, his tone casual but curious. “He says you’re the glue that holds everyone together.”

Silvia glanced at him, surprised. “He said that?”

Carlos nodded. “It’s easy to see. You’re the steady one. Even when you’re quiet, you have this... presence.”

She felt her cheeks warm under his gaze. “You’re giving me too much credit.”

“I don’t think so,” he said, his voice soft but firm.

Silvia looked away, the sincerity in his tone making her feel suddenly vulnerable.

“What about you?” she asked, changing the subject. “Who’s your glue?”

Carlos hesitated, his expression turning thoughtful. “I’m still figuring that out,” he admitted. “Acting takes you to a lot of places, but it doesn’t leave much room for real connections.”

Silvia nodded, her heart unexpectedly aching for him. “That sounds lonely.”

“Sometimes,” he said, his eyes meeting hers. “But nights like this help.”

Her breath caught, the intensity of his gaze stirring something deep inside her. She opened her mouth to respond, but Noah’s voice interrupted them.

“Silvia! Carlos! Come join us!”

She turned to see the group waving them over, their laughter cutting through the moment.

Carlos smiled, his expression easy again. “Looks like we’re being summoned.”

“Yeah,” Silvia said, her voice steadier than she felt.

As they walked back to the others, Silvia couldn’t help but wonder what had just passed between them. She wasn’t ready to name it, but one thing was clear: Carlos was no longer just an acquaintance.
