Dear Elisa,

It is wonderful to hear from you. Everyone is fine, though we have not heard from your aunt Emily since your birthday ball. I will leave her address at the end of this letter and, if you would like to, you could write to her. I am certain that she will write to you for Christmas, as she usually does. She does have the address for your school. As soon as she does get in contact with you, please inform us. I hope your studies are going well, and I have asked Monsieur Labrousse to meet you. Of course, I doubt you will receive this letter until just before Christmas, so that is more than likely  when he will visit you. Your sisters have requested that they write separate letters to place into this envelope. They also ask that you write them a letter each. Please don't go against what they say, I am terrified at the thought of what they might do.

With love,

Daniel and Theresa.

Hello Elisa! Thank you for your letter. I am not getting into trouble and my studies are going very well. We were going to play in the snow yesterday, but Edith couldn't find our boots. We played in it today, though, but the snow had turned very icy and would not stick together that well. Caroline tried to make a little snowman, but it fell apart as soon as she put the head on. I drew a picture of what I wanted the snowman to look like. I can show you when you come home! Also, thank you for sending me a doll for my birthday. She is sitting on the end of my bed. Her name is Rose, like the beginning of your middle name.

Love from Helena.

Dear Elisa,

This letter is written by Delia and Caroline. We both decided to put all of our writing into one letter so it was a little bit easier to read. We wanted to say thank you for the other letter you sent. We aren't getting into any trouble at all. We were even able to play in the snow! It is very cold here. Is it cold where you are? Winchester, was it? Or Windsor? In any case, we hope you are having a good time and that you also are not getting into trouble. We hope you come back soon, because we miss you so much. We can't wait to see you soon!

Love Delia and Caroline.

It was the fourteenth of December, or thereabouts. It had been snowing now for about a month and the headmistress had to give us all a pair of boots to walk around in. We were also given the option to wear gloves and a scarf which matched the colour of our dresses. The youngest girls spent hours playing in the snow, building snowmen and getting soaked during snowball fights or while making snow angels.

I had received a letter from Martin Labrousse. He would be visiting me today, the fourteenth. I wasn't as nervous as Freda had been when meeting her fiance, but I was still shaky and anxious. Freda and I sat inside by the fire to keep warm. Since it was Saturday and so near Christmas, most students didn't have many lessons. However, it was very obvious that they wouldn't bother us, what with all of the snow. While we waited, Freda was doing some of her literature homework. She kept asking for help, but I wasn't paying much attention to her. I was watching the flames behind the fireguard swirling around, doing everything I could to keep my mind off of meeting Martin.

The front door opened, causing me to jump slightly. I kept my eyes focused on the fireplace. Freda hit my arm, grinning.

"He's here."

"You don't even know what he looks like, Freda." My heart pounded in my chest. "I doubt it is him." She tutted and rolled her eyes. I felt her lean back into the sofa and she giggled.
