It was late—late enough that the house was steeped in complete silence, the kind only found in the middle of the night. Aizawa was passed out on the couch after the chaotic events of the day, one arm draped lazily over his eyes, while the TV played some crime documentary he’d fallen asleep to.
But Souto wasn’t sleeping. He was wide awake in his room, clutching a pillow tightly, now that he’d had a few hours to think about it, he realized he might have gone too far, guilt eating at him.
“I have to fix this,” Souto muttered, sitting upright.
For most kids, fixing a mistake might involve saying sorry, drawing a picture, or maybe doing a chore. For Souto, the plan was, naturally, chaotic.
He slipped out of his room, tiptoeing past Aizawa’s sprawled figure. He knew exactly what he needed: Aizawa’s laptop.
Getting the laptop wasn’t hard. Aizawa was a deep sleeper after the whirlwind day, and Souto managed to snag the laptop without even waking him up. The harder part was sneaking into Shinso’s room without tripping on anything in the dark.
Souto pushed open the door to Shinso’s room, peeking inside. His big brother was sprawled across the bed, one arm tucked under his pillow, the other hanging off the edge. He looked peaceful—calm in a way that made Souto feel even guiltier.
“Okay,” Souto whispered to himself. “Step one: sneak in. Step two: fix this.”
He climbed onto the bed, dragging the laptop with him, and plopped it down between them. Shinso stirred slightly, mumbling something unintelligible, but didn’t wake up.
Souto fumbled with the laptop, clicking around until he found a movie Shinso might like it. It was one of those sci-fi films with robots and explosions.
The screen lit up, and the sound of the movie’s opening music finally roused Shinso from his sleep.
“Wha... what are you doing?” Shinso mumbled groggily, blinking at the light.
“Shh!” Souto hissed, pressing a finger to his lips. “I’m fixing things.”
Shinso raised an eyebrow, still half-asleep. “Fixing things by... stealing Dad’s laptop?”
“It’s called borrowing,” Souto corrected. “And I brought it here so we could watch this. You know, as a... peace offering.”
Shinso stared at him for a moment, his brain slowly catching up to the situation. “You bit me earlier, and now you’re... apologizing with a movie?”
“Exactly,” Souto said, as if it were the most logical thing in the world.
Shinso sighed, sitting up slightly. “You’re so weird.”
“Yeah, but you’re still gonna watch it with me,” Souto said smugly, pressing play.
Shinso rolled his eyes but didn’t argue. Instead, he shifted to make room for Souto, who immediately snuggled up beside him with the blanket.
---
For the next hour or so, the two brothers watched the movie in comfortable silence, the tension from earlier in the day slowly melting away. Souto occasionally whispered comments about the explosions or how cool the robots were, while Shinso just shook his head, amused by the younger boy’s enthusiasm.
At one point, Souto glanced up at Shinso. “Hey... you’re not still mad, right?”
Shinso looked down at him, his expression softening. “Nah. I wasn’t that mad to begin with. But you seriously need to stop with the biting.”
“I’m working on it,” Souto said, sheepish.
“Good,” Shinso said, ruffling his hair. “You’re lucky you're cute.”
“Obviously,” Souto replied, leaning against him.
---
It was well past midnight when Aizawa finally woke up on the couch. Passing Shinso’s room he heard the explosions effects of the movie.
He stood in the doorway, arms crossed, watching his two boys curled up together on the bed, the laptop balanced precariously between them as the movie played on.
“Unbelievable,” Aizawa muttered to himself.
Souto spotted him first, freezing like a deer caught in headlights. “Uh... hi, Dad.”
“Bed. Now,” Aizawa said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
“But the movie’s not over—”
“Bed.”
Souto groaned but slid off the bed, shuffling toward the door. “Worth it,” he muttered under his breath.
Aizawa just shook his head, picking up the laptop. “You two are going to be the death of me,” he said, shutting the laptop and heading back to his room.
As Souto climbed into his own bed, he smiled to himself. He’d made things right with Shinso, and that was all that mattered—even if it meant being caught red-handed.
“Totally worth it,” he whispered, drifting off to sleep.
