The apartment was unusually quiet except for the faint hum of the refrigerator and the occasional shuffle of footsteps as Mia, Madelyn, and Madison set up the final touches for Drew's surprise party. Aurora had just finished arranging the snacks on the coffee table, and Chase, JD, and Carlacia were in the corner arguing over who got to light the candles when the time came.
"You're literally a hazard," Carlacia said, pointing a mock-accusatory finger at JD. "No way you're touching the matches."
JD gasped in mock offense, clutching his chest. "First of all, rude. Second, I'm responsible now. I've grown."
Chase snorted. "Yeah, sure. Responsible enough to burn the entire apartment down. I vote me."
Aurora rolled her eyes, laughing as she placed a party hat on JD's head. "How about nobody votes? Drew's going to walk in any second, and we're still arguing about candles. Priorities, people!"
Madison smiled from her spot near the couch, adjusting a banner that read Happy Birthday Drew! in big, bold letters. "Aurora's right. You guys can duke it out later."
