Dian sat quietly in the corner of the medical bay, the soft hum of machines filling the silence. She had been given a room away from the others, a place to rest and recover, though she doubted that either of those things would come easily. The walls of her mind were shattered—broken apart in a way she couldn't comprehend. But in the moments after Konig's embrace, she had felt something shift. Not healing, but a crack in the fortress she had built around herself.
The team had left her alone for the most part. They respected her space, but they hadn't abandoned her. They didn't trust that she was truly fine—not yet, and neither did she.
Konig had stayed behind to speak with the others, his heavy footsteps echoing in the hallway outside her door. She could hear their voices muffled through the thick walls, but the words didn't matter. What mattered was the emptiness inside her, the numbness that clung to her like a second skin.
Her fingers twitched against the soft fabric of the blanket she had pulled around her. The room was dimly lit, a single overhead light casting a faint glow across the sterile walls. It was strange to be here, alone with her thoughts. The feeling of isolation was no longer as comforting as it once had been.
She let out a quiet breath, her eyes closing briefly as the memories of the past few days came rushing back. The outburst, the pain, the wave of nausea that had followed... and then the darkness that had descended. It was hard to separate the emotions, the rawness of everything, but one thing remained clear: when Konig had held her, when he had told her to "rest," there had been something in his voice that reached her in a way nothing else had.
Papa.
The word floated in her mind, unbidden but undeniable. It wasn't something she had ever said to him, not in those terms. But the more she thought about it, the more it made sense. He was the one who had been there for her when no one else had. He had protected her, and guided her, even when she had been lost in herself.
The room door opened just as she was lost in her thoughts, and Konig stepped inside, his gaze soft but searching. His eyes met hers, and for a moment, neither of them said anything. It wasn't necessary. They understood each other now in a way that words couldn't capture.
"Papa," she murmured, the word leaving her lips before she even had the chance to reconsider it. Her eyes met his, vulnerable and uncertain.
Konig's expression shifted—a slight tightness in his jaw, but there was warmth in his gaze as he crossed the room to kneel beside her. His hand rested on her shoulder, a silent show of reassurance.
"You're still with me?" he asked quietly, his voice thick with something unspoken.
Dian nodded slowly, her eyes never leaving his. "I... I don't know how to be anymore. But I'll try. I'll try for you."
Konig's thumb brushed gently against her shoulder, the action tender. "I'm not going anywhere, Dian. You don't have to do this alone."
She nodded again, the weight of his words sinking in, wrapping around her like the warmth of his embrace. There was no need to fight him, no need to push him away anymore. For the first time in a long time, she allowed herself to feel the weight of his protection, his unwavering commitment.
"Rest now," he murmured again, more gently this time, as he stood up and offered her the space she needed.
But Dian didn't retreat into herself this time. She allowed the silence to stretch, the distance between them closing just enough for her to feel a sense of peace that had been absent for far too long.
And as she finally allowed her eyes to close, feeling the quiet presence of Konig beside her, she whispered, almost to herself, "Papa." The word felt strange on her tongue, but it was real. It was hers. And in that moment, she finally understood why she had called him that.
In a world of violence and chaos, Konig was the one constant she could hold onto—the one thing she had never feared losing.
