Decision

The room was silent, the air thick with the weight of unspoken words. The house seemed to breathe with them, its presence pressing in from all sides. She sat on the edge of the bed, her hands folded in her lap, her mind racing with possibilities. He stood by the window, his gaze distant, lost in his thoughts, but she knew his mind was on the same thing—how to stop the house.

Finally, he spoke, his voice low, almost defeated. "There's only one way to end this. I have to sever my bond with the house. If I do, I'll die, but the house will be destroyed. It's the only way."

She turned to him, her heart skipping a beat. The finality in his tone made her blood run cold. She had known this was coming, but hearing him say it made her stomach twist.

"No," she said firmly, standing up. Her voice was calm, but it carried the weight of determination. "There has to be another way. You don't have to die for this. We can find another way to break its hold on us."

He turned to face her, his eyes filled with a mixture of frustration and concern. "You don't understand. The house... it's part of me. I've been bound to it for so long, I don't even know if I can live without it. The only way to stop it from feeding on us is for me to sever my connection with it." He stepped toward her, his steps slow, deliberate. "And if that means I have to die, then so be it. I'll do whatever it takes to save you."

She shook her head, stepping closer, her voice growing softer but no less resolute. "I won't lose you. Not like this. We can figure something else out." Her eyes locked onto his, and for a brief moment, everything else in the room faded away. It was just the two of them, staring at each other, their hearts beating in sync.

He took a step back, his gaze dropping to the floor. "I can't let you risk your life for me. You deserve so much more than this." His voice cracked, his shoulders slumping with the weight of his thoughts. "You deserve to be free."

Her heart swelled with emotion as she stepped closer, lifting his chin with a gentle finger until their eyes met once more. "You think I'd leave you? You're wrong. I'm not going to abandon you, not after everything we've been through. We're in this together."

As she stood there, her hand still resting on his chin, she saw the storm in his eyes begin to fade. He had been prepared to sacrifice himself, but her words had broken through the armor he'd built around his heart. She wasn't afraid of him. She wasn't afraid of the house. She would fight for them both.

"I don't care what it takes," she continued, her voice firm but filled with love. "I'll find a way to free us both without you having to give yourself up. You don't have to be the martyr."

His breath caught in his throat as he studied her. Her strength, her unwavering belief in him, it was more than he ever thought he could deserve. She wasn't just beautiful in the way her eyes sparkled in the dim light. She was pure, like a celestial being sent to save him from himself. She was his angel.

He stepped closer, his hand reaching for hers, and when their fingers brushed, something sparked between them. Something powerful, something undeniable. He looked at her with a mix of reverence and adoration, his voice barely a whisper. "You're my light, you know that?"

She smiled, her eyes softening as she held his gaze. "And you're my protector."

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The weight of the world seemed to hang in the balance, the house's dark energy pressing in, but their bond felt stronger. More real than anything the house could throw at them.

He watched her, his heart full of something he had long forgotten—a hope that they could survive this together. She wasn't just his salvation. She was his reason to fight, his reason to believe that there was still something good in the world. Something worth fighting for.

Her thoughts mirrored his. She saw him as more than just the creature he had once been. He wasn't the monster who had lived in the shadows for so long. He was a warrior, a protector—a golden retriever in a black cat's body. A beast on the outside, but inside, he was soft, loyal, and caring. And she loved him for it.

"I'm not giving up on you," she whispered, her voice steady despite the storm of emotions swirling between them. "I won't let you die."

He smiled, a faint glimmer of hope flickering in his eyes. "Then we'll do this together. We'll find a way out. Together."

She nodded, her heart beating louder than ever.

Together.

That was all that mattered.
