Twist
Celeste's fingers brushed against the cold doorknob, the metal smooth beneath her trembling touch. She hesitated, the weight of the house pressing down on her like a vice. It pulsed under her fingertips, alive and humming with an energy she couldn't name. Her chest tightened, but with a deep breath, she turned the knob and pushed the door open.
The world shifted instantly. The familiar, suffocating walls of the house dissolved, replaced by the harsh, sterile brilliance of a laboratory. Cold, artificial light flooded the space, bouncing off metallic surfaces that gleamed with an unsettling sharpness. The air was thick with the acrid stench of antiseptic and chemicals, clawing at her throat. The walls seemed to ripple faintly, as though the house itself were breathing, watching her every move with unseen eyes. The floor beneath her felt steady but wrong, as if it resented her presence.
She took a step forward, only to freeze as her gaze locked onto Dean. He stood a few feet away, his back turned to her, his form blurry, like a reflection on a surface disturbed by ripples. "Dean?" Her voice wavered, uncertain if it would even reach him.
He didn't answer. Instead, his body began to shift, his silhouette twisting unnaturally. Limbs elongated, then snapped back; his shoulders broadened, his spine arched as if under an invisible weight. The sound of bones cracking echoed through the space, sharp and raw, making her flinch. His head snapped back, and his face—his human face—faded into something monstrous. His features contorted, his light green eyes glowing with a predatory intensity that sent a shiver down her spine. His skin darkened, his figure larger now, more imposing. The air around him grew heavy, suffused with an unnatural heat.
Celeste's breath hitched, her heart hammering in her chest as she tried to reconcile the man she knew with the creature before her. But before she could adjust, the transformation began again. Dean's monstrous form shimmered, his sharp claws and angular features softening as though being smoothed away. The glowing green of his eyes dimmed, and his figure blurred once more, shifting into something almost mundane.
His final form emerged with startling clarity: he stood in a stark white lab coat, its clean lines sharp against the chaos that had surrounded them moments ago. His hands were steady, devoid of claws or deformities, but what they held sent a chill through her. In his right hand, a syringe glinted under the harsh fluorescent light, the needle long and wickedly sharp.
The calm in his expression was what truly unsettled her. His face was devoid of emotion, his light green eyes dulled to an eerie emptiness. The warmth she had come to know, even in his monstrous form, was gone, replaced by an unyielding stillness. It wasn't the rage or primal ferocity she had braced herself for—it was the unnerving absence of anything.
"Dean..." she whispered, her voice trembling. He didn't respond, didn't acknowledge her plea. He simply stood there, the syringe glinting in his hand, the pristine lab coat glowing under the sterile lights like a symbol of something clinical, detached, and inevitable.
Her thoughts raced. What is this? What does "the house" want me to see? Her knees threatened to buckle as she took in the sight before her. He looked so human and yet so alien, the calm on his face a stark contrast to the storm of fear and confusion raging inside her.
"Dean, what are you doing?" she finally managed, her voice cracking. But the calm in his eyes didn't waver, and the sight of that syringe, poised as if ready to strike, made her stomach churn.
Was this another trick of "the house", meant to unearth her deepest fears? Or had she truly lost him, the man she loved now just a puppet of "the house's" endless torment?
