-------------------------------------------------------
Scar loved baking.
That's for sure. He baked to unwind, when he felt stressed, he baked to treat his neighbours, he baked for fun. And he baked to supply his Cookie Shop. That was one of his many genius ideas. He was able to do his hobby and make some coin out of it. The fact the Hermits seemed to enjoy his cookies was an added bonus.
Scar baked cakes, cupcakes, brownies, all kinds of sweets. But cookies were his speciality. So, aside from the Bûche de Noël he gifted to Grian and Mumbo, he spends his entire day baking cookies. Or at least, he had planned to.
He had set up the kitchen, preheated the oven and chilled the dough. Right as he was about to sprinkle some flour on the surface of the kitchen island, he heard a knocking on his door. Soon after, the click of the door opening sounded and he heard voices as visitors entered his house. He knew it were his neighbours, not just by voice, but because they knew they could enter unannounced.
Mumbo insisted on knocking first tho, which Scar secretly appreciated. He got jumpscared by the sudden appearance of Grian one too many times. He didn't mind the pesky bird being there, he did tell him to come over whenever anyway, but he sometimes didn't expect it. Besides, Grian could be very sneaky when he wanted to be.
"Scar? Grian and I came to visit," Mumbo called out. "In the kitchen!" Scar called back, busy rolling out the dough. The rustle of feathers was Scar's only warning before his vision was filled with curious dark eyes and a red sweater.
"What're you making?"
Gran forced his way in between the counter and Scar. The other chuckled as he put down the rolling pin, wrapping his arms around the smaller in a tight hug. Grian hugged back before bouncing over to the oven to take a peek. "Oh, you got a little something-," Mumbo started saying, pointing at Grian's sweater. He shut his mouth with a chuckle as Scar gestured for him to stay silent. Grian turned to him to shoot him a questioning look, but Mumbo shook his head.
Grian shrugged and turned back to look over the many sprinkles Scar had set out on the counter. The motion revealed 2 floury handprints on the back of Grian's sweater. Mumbo and Scar shared a look and a chuckle. "Anything we can help with?" Mumbo asked, shrugging out of his suit jacket.
Scar hummed, tapping his chin as he thought. "My plan was to bake Christmas themed cookies to stock up the store," he said," If you want to, you can help me making them." An excited 'yes!' from Grian made the both of them chuckle. Mumbo rolled up his sleeves, action speaking louder than words., as he picked up the rolling pin Scar had discarded earlier.
The next moments were spent in comfortable silence, one of their communicators playing a playlist of random Christmas songs. Mumbo was in charge of rolling out the dough, while Grian used all kinds of cookie cutters to shape the cookies and Scar occasionally made some new dough. There was a comfortable and happy vibe in the kitchen and Scar loved it. Way better than baking all by himself.
His heart beat loudly as he watched Mumbo roll out another slab of dough, his muscles visibly flexing as he put in the effort. And a warm fuzzy feeling rolled around in his belly as he watched the happy yet focused expression on Grian's face as he picked out which cookie cutter to use. He couldn't keep the smile off of his face as he transferred yet another sheet of cookies from the oven to the marble counter top to let them cool off.
"Here you go!" Grian chirped as he handed Scar the next batch. He mumbled as 'thank you' as he placed it in the oven. Mumbo wiped his brow and went to wash his hands, when he made a curious noise. Both Grian and Scar shot him a questioning look. Mumbo looked around the kitchen as he dried his hands, eyes going over the many sheets of cookies cooling off on the counter tops. Scar copied him, one eyebrow raised. In his head he counted how many cookies he needed to stock up the store, without the chance of them going stale. They made almost twice as many.
"We've made too many cookies..."
Mumbo let out some awkward animal sounding noise and Grian seemed to realise the same as he began to almost hysterically laugh in response. Scar couldn't help but join in. Mumbo simply looked concerned. "Don't we have to decorate them as well?" he asked carefully, eyeing the icing and sprinkles which Scar had set out. Grian lost it as he almost fell over from laughing so hard, keeping himself upright by clutching Scar's arm. Scar nodded, not able to verbally respond.
Once they quieted down a bit, he confessed to not being sure if he should be crying instead. "Well, we're here to help," Mumbo said, placing a hand on Scar's shoulder. "We're not going anywhere until all these cookies have been decorated," Grian said, squeezing the arm still in his grasp. Scar gave them a smile to convey his gratitude.
He proceeded to instruct the other two in which way they could decorate the cookies and soon all tasks were divided among them. It went well for a long period of time, once again a comfortable silence had settled over them as they worked. Grian had 'accidentally' broke some cookies in half and he claimed they were unsaleable, so he decided to eat them. With the amount of cookies they had baked, it wasn't that much of a problem.
At some point it all descended into chaos.
It started when Mumbo's icing bag stopped cooperating, making him squeeze way to hard into the bag and making its contents explode all over himself and Grian, who stood beside him. The avian let out a dramatic gasp as he took in his ruined sweater and without hesitation grabbed a small handful of sprinkles and threw it at Mumbo. The sprinkles stuck to the icing on the other's shirt, making him more colourful. Before mumbo could retaliate, Scar shouted affronted at them and flicked a piece of fondant to the both of them.
Let's just say that most of the cookies got decorated.
Once they were kind of done, there was icing on the floor, the walls, the ceiling and on the three of them. In need of a change of clothes, they all took turns taking a shower and ending up in some of Scar's ugly Christmas sweaters. Grian seemed to almost drown in it, seeing as he was a fair bit smaller than Scar, but man did he look good in it.
As Scar joined the other two in the living room, Grian perked up. "I have an idea on what to do with the excessive amount of cookies," he said with a sparkle in his eyes. "I will not be using my cookies in a prank."
"Hey!"
Grian squawked affronted," who said I want to use them for a prank?!" He got two unimpressed looks. "Besides, they're our cookies."
He huffed as he crossed his arms. "Sorry, our cookies," Scar chuckled and patted Grian's hair. "So, what's your idea?" Mumbo asked, ever so curious. "I thought, that maybe, we could give the left-over cookies to the other Hermits," Grian explained," like some sort of free sample!" Scar nodded approvingly. "And then when they got the taste and want more, they have to buy them at the store!" he added excitedly.
"You could use that as a slogan, mate," Mumbo chuckled. "Maybe I will," Scar said, earning him a laugh. After talking the idea through, they all started to work on packaging the cookies. While Scar stocked up the store, Grian and Mumbo distributed the cookies all around the server. Once they were done, they met back at Scar's place to share some hot chocolate, or tea in Mumbo's case, and watch some corny Christmas movies together.
And if later on, the Hermits had demanded more cookies while emptying the shop, and Scar had to ask the other two for help again, nobody was complaining. Even if they had to clean the kitchen again. And again.
And again.
