Charlotte and Engfa walked hand in hand, their laughter blending with the sound of distant waves. Dinner had been perfect, the stars above sparkling like the promises they shared."You know," Charlotte began, glancing sideways at Engfa, "this trip is turning out better than I thought. I didn't think you could plan something so... peaceful."
Engfa laughed, the sound rich and warm. "What's that supposed to mean? You thought I'd plan a disaster?"
Charlotte grinned, teasing. "Well, let's just say you're not exactly known for your organization."
"Hey! I organized our anniversary dinner last year!" Engfa retorted, pretending to be offended.
Charlotte gave her a skeptical look. "You mean the one where you forgot the reservation and bribed the staff with selfies?"
Engfa shrugged, her lips twitching into a smirk. "Worked, didn't it? You still had the best night of your life."
Charlotte rolled her eyes but couldn't help smiling. "You're impossible."
"And you love it," Engfa replied, bumping her shoulder against Charlotte's.
Charlotte grinned. "I am. But you're still annoying for not telling me what you planned for tomorrow."
Engfa chuckled. "Patience, Nuu. Good things come to those who wait."
They were crossing the quiet coastal road near their cabin when the distant sound of a car broke through the peaceful night. Neither of them paid it much attention, lost in their playful banter.
Charlotte frowned, glancing down the road. "Isn't that car going a bit fast?"
Engfa followed her gaze, her playful expression fading. "Stay close to me," she said, her voice suddenly firm.
Suddenly, the car's headlights came into view, and Charlotte froze. The vehicle was moving far too fast for the narrow, winding road.
"Cha, move!" Engfa shouted, her voice sharp.
But Charlotte was rooted to the spot, her eyes wide with shock as the car rushed toward them.
In an instant, Engfa sprang into action. She grabbed Charlotte by the arm, shoving her out of the car's path with all her strength.
"Engfa, no!" Charlotte screamed as she stumbled and fell to the side of the road, her hands scraping against the rough gravel.
Engfa turned back toward the car, but there was no time to escape. The driver swerved at the last second, but the side of the car clipped Engfa with brutal force, sending her crashing to the ground.
The car sped off into the night without stopping, its taillights disappearing around a bend.
Charlotte scrambled to her feet, her body trembling.
"Engfa!" she cried, running to where her lover lay motionless on the road.
Engfa was on her back, her breaths shallow. Blood seeped from a gash on her forehead, staining her pale skin. Her eyes fluttered open at the sound of Charlotte's voice.
"Nuu..." she whispered, her tone weak but filled with relief.
Charlotte knelt beside her, tears streaming down her face.
"No, no, no. You're going to be okay. I'll call for help." She fumbled for her phone, her hands shaking uncontrollably.
"Engfaaa," Charlotte sobbed, dropping to her knees beside her. "Stay with me. Please, you have to stay with me."
