The soft hum of the music player filled the lab, providing a soothing backdrop to the quiet chaos of Leorina’s day. She worked methodically at her station, her delicate hands grinding herbs into powder with a mortar and pestle.
On the counter beside her, a neat arrangement of dried leaves, diced stems, and jars of freshly made paste stood as evidence of her progress. Each jar was carefully labeled in her neat handwriting before being set aside for storage.
Across the room, Fenrir and Nyx entertained themselves with the toys she’d crafted for them. Fenrir, in his wolfish form, batted at a sturdy ball that bounced unpredictably across the floor, his golden eyes gleaming with delight. Nyx, more precise and fox-like in his movements, stalked a stuffed toy shaped like a bird, pouncing on it with an agility that made Leorina smile.
Her smile deepened as she glanced at them, finding their playful energy a comforting presence. 'Who would’ve thought I’d enjoy having company in the lab?' she mused. For years, the space had felt too large, too sterile, but now it was alive with warmth and vitality.
The sharp buzz of her communicator interrupted her thoughts. Leorina sighed, wiping her hands on a clean towel as she stepped over to the device. The screen blinked with Daniella’s name, and she quickly turned down the volume of her music player before answering.
“Leorina here,” she said, her tone calm and professional.
“Miss D’Maris,” Daniella’s voice was hurried, her usual composed demeanor replaced with urgency. “I need to brief you on today’s emergency tasks."
Leorina arched an eyebrow, her mind already running through the possibilities. “What’s happened?”
Before Daniella could answer, Leorina turned to Fenrir and Nyx. Their playful antics had ceased, and they were watching her with quiet understanding. She gave them a small nod, and without a word, they padded to the secret entrance to her bedroom. Using the mechanics she’d recently installed, they activated the hidden door and slipped inside, taking their toys with them.
