ARRIVAL
Leorina sat in her lab, hands twitching with the temptation to pick up her quill. The Founding Festival’s glow still lingered in her mind —the lanterns’ soft light, the cheers of her people— but the festivities were a distant echo compared to the lure of unfinished formulas and half-written notes sprawled across her desk.
She had barely begun to immerse herself in her latest findings when the unmistakable sound of boots echoed in the corridor outside her lab.
The door creaked open, revealing Caeric’s tall frame. He leaned casually against the doorframe, arms crossed, a knowing smirk tugging at his lips. “Caught you,” he said with the tone of someone who had done this many times before.
Leorina turned sharply, hiding the half-filled page behind her. “I wasn’t doing anything.”
“Right,” Caeric drawled, pushing himself off the frame. “Just staring at parchment for inspiration, were you? Father’s orders still stand, you know—no work.”
“I’m not—”
“Leorina.” A deeper, sterner voice cut through her protest. Aldren D’Maris entered the room, his commanding presence impossible to ignore. He surveyed her desk, his sharp eyes catching the faint ink stains on her fingertips. “You promised.”
Leorina fidgeted under his gaze. “I was just jotting down a thought, nothing strenuous.”
Aldren’s brow furrowed, but before he could speak, Caeric intervened. “Come on, Lea. Just one week. You can handle that, can’t you?” His voice was gentler now, almost teasing, but there was an undertone of genuine concern.
Leorina sighed, feeling trapped. “Fine. I’ll stop.”
Satisfied, Aldren nodded. “We have other plans for you today.”
