SIBLING BONDING

The lab was her sanctuary, her haven

The lab was her sanctuary, her haven. Leorina D’Maris had not stepped outside its doors in two weeks. The once-pristine space was now a chaotic maze of equipment, stacks of notes, and discarded vials. The air was heavy with the sharp tang of chemicals and the faint musk of herbs she had ground into powders. Yet for her, it was the most exhilarating environment she could imagine.

Leorina sat at her desk, meticulously jotting down the properties of various herbs and compounds. The refugees’ conditions were unlike anything she had encountered before.

The three patients with the severe unknown illness had symptoms that defied conventional medicine —fevers that burned too high for too long, internal hemorrhaging, and a strange, rapid deterioration of cellular integrity.

“Fascinating,” she murmured, her green eyes glinting with a mixture of curiosity and determination. “It’s almost as if their bodies are rejecting their own existence. Could it be a parasitic agent? A toxin? No... something deeper.”

She tied her hair back, grabbed her gloves, and began to prepare her first set of experiments.

By the third day, Leorina had hit a wall. None of the remedies she had synthesized were yielding results. She needed to understand the effects firsthand, so she did what she had always done when faced with a medical mystery: she became her own test subject.

“This one seems promising,” she whispered, holding up a vial of pale green liquid. She had mixed it with extracts from bioluminescent algae, known for their regenerative properties, and a rare flowering herb that boosted cellular repair.

She injected the serum into her arm and waited, watching her body’s response. At first, there was nothing. Then came the familiar signs of rejection —nausea, dizziness, and an overwhelming heat coursing through her veins.
