Storms Within

Hyejin stirs awake, her body still sore but her fever broken. The first thing she notices is warmth—Lee Know's hand intertwined with hers, his head tilted back against the headboard. His features, often sharp and unreadable, are softened in sleep, a vulnerability he rarely shows when awake. For a long moment, she just watches him. There's a conflict warring inside her—a mix of affection and fear. Memories of their banter, his silent care, and the way his gaze lingered on her at times she thought he wasn't looking flood her mind.

But then there's the other side—the part of her that remembers the sting of being left behind, of being told she wasn't enough. The moment he walked away, chasing a dream, and leaving her with nothing but memories. And yet, as she stares at him now, her breath still caught in her throat, there's no denying it: she wants to be with him, despite the fear, despite the risk. The vulnerability in his expression, the soft exhale of his breath—everything about him feels like a promise and a warning all at once.

As if sensing her gaze, Lee Know stirs. His lashes flutter open, and his eyes, momentarily hazy with sleep, meet hers.

"You're awake," he murmurs, his voice low and husky from sleep.

Hyejin quickly looks away, her cheeks flushing with the sudden awareness of how close they are. "Yeah... and you haven't eaten anything proper since yesterday."

She starts to sit up, her movements brisk, but as she does, their faces brush close. Too close. The air seems to thicken between them.

Neither pulls away.

Hyejin's breath hitches as their faces draw closer, the world narrowing to just the two of them. Lee Know's raises his hand brushes her cheek, his touch feather-light yet charged with a gravity that seems to pull them together. Her heart races as he leans in, both their lips just a whisper away from the other's

But then—he freezes.

The moment fractures as his eyes widen slightly, haunted. A flash of memory rushes through his mind: the two of them at a dimly lit party, the thrum of music in the background, the lingering tension and looks in their eyes before the kiss which was shared in the heat of a confession.

And the ache that followed—the next day, boarding a plane to the U.S., leaving her behind to chase a dream he thought would make him whole.

The memory strikes like a thunderclap, raw and unforgiving.

"No," he whispers, more to himself than to her. His hand falls away from her face abruptly, leaving her stunned, a cold emptiness spreading where his warmth once was.

"Minho?" Hyejin's voice wavers, confusion giving way to hurt, as she watches him pull away.

He stands up, retreating a step as if physical distance could erase the closeness they'd just shared. "This... this isn't right," he says, his tone colder now, as though the warmth they'd built had been a lie.

"What do you mean?" she asks, her voice trembling, the words catching in her throat.

"I don't want to hurt you," he says quietly, his jaw tight, his eyes refusing to meet hers. Then, in a voice edged with finality, "Not again."

Hyejin's hands ball into fists, her heart pounding in her chest. She watches as he retreats, her mind racing for some kind of explanation, something to cling to in the wreckage of their shared moment. But there's nothing. No explanation that makes sense, no excuse to justify the distance that grew between them all of a sudden, like a fog rolling in over a clear horizon, blurring what once was.

Later that evening, Hyejin parks her car in front of Lee Know's house, her fingers gripping the steering wheel, her knuckles pale as she tries to steady her breathing. The rain drums against the windshield, its rhythm a chaotic mirror of her emotions. She hadn't planned to come back tonight, but the unresolved tension, the weight of the conversation they'd left hanging, burns inside her. It demands answers. She can't let it go.
