Chapter 26
Mitch's POV
He caught her! Oh my god! He fucking caught her! Thank god! You could see the relief sweep across all of our faces as we saw the heroic movement just made. All of that faded when I realized the excruciating truth. Caroline and Jimmy were trapped! Everyone started to sprint to save them and eventually I realized that I was alone. I went to an elevator that was behind them and everyone else went to the stairs! That didn't matter right now though. All that matters is saving Jimmy and Caroline. I pressed the down button and hopped in. Once the doors opened I reached in and grabbed the two love birds right before the walkers could get to them. That was a close one!
Immediately Caroline embraced and just mumbled words like "thanks" and "oh my god." She was in utter shock. Jimmy stood there and just caught his breath as we went back up the elevator.
I hoped to dear god that we weren't too late and right when the doors opened I rushed out of the elevator. Then I saw them. Katrina. Jerome. Ty. Ian. All of them at the bottom of the stairs looking for Jimmy and Caroline.
"Guys! Up here!" I called to them. They all looked up in horror when they notice the problem they had gotten themselves into. Now, all of them turned around and began to rush up the stairs... Or at least they tried to go up the stairs. They would have made it too. If only a walker hadn't grabbed Ty's ankle. If only his fall hadn't made a domino to the rest. If only this... If only that... It's all a blur to me. One second they are running and another I'm watching my best friend die. And then my girlfriend right afterwards.
I felt kind of numb to be completely honest. It's like it never happened, but I know it did. I felt tears build up in my eyes as I saw Caroline collapse into Jimmy. Katrina was her best friend, too. I didn't have anyone to collapse into though. She died. The one girl that meant the world to me... Is gone. And I couldn't do anything help.
