NOVA"I can't believe he fired you."
"I know," I murmured, glancing up from my computer for the first time in twenty minutes.
Everything hurt and all I did was sit on a hard, wooden chair for two hours. My muscles were stiff. My eyes needed a break. I was hungry. My day had an awful start and as I sat at my desk looking for job openings, I started to despise Paul all over again.
What a fucking inconvenience to my life.
Why is nobody hiring?
Maybe I should take his advice and have my tits out for the next interview. Asshole.
Jade was sprawled over my bed while she texted her long distance boyfriend—giggling every now and then with a certain glint in her eye.
She missed him, and then she didn't. She wanted to leave him, and then she didn't.
It was complicated and I stopped trying to understand their relationship a while ago. I just nodded my head and found her complaints entertaining enough.
She smirked, a cheeky look on her face when she looked up at me. "I can't believe you went and fucked a man you knew for two minutes on that same day."
My mouth dropped. I never should have told her and at the same time, I couldn't not tell her. I had to speak to someone, right? I was going to burst if I didn't.
Ramiro had found his way into our conversation and Jade notoriously lived for the gossip. She didn't know the details—but she knew enough to know that I slept in a stranger's bed after he took me home and tired me out.
Maybe that is too much information.
"Two minutes?" I grinned, grasping at a soft pillow to throw at her. "It was at least five."
I think. Was it two minutes?
He had me in his bed longer than he knew me.
She chuckled, turning over onto her stomach. "Girl, I'm jealous."
Her laugh faded into a solemn sigh.
"What's wrong?" I asked her, dropping the pen I'd been holding. I wasn't using it. I liked having something to hold in my hands while I skimmed the internet.
I glanced over at Jade when she didn't say anything, finding her silence alarming. She always had something to say. Her lower lip was caught between her teeth and I saw the question on her face.
I gestured with my hand, willing her to speak before I threw something harder than a pillow at her.
"Nothing," she muttered, rolling over to her back to stare at the ceiling. "Was it easy?"
"Was what easy?" I asked, scowling at her.
She let out a breath, resting her hands on her stomach. "You know..."
"No, I don't know."
"Jade, what?" I pressed again, frowning at my friend.
She raised her hands exasperatedly, groaning out in frustration before turning to look at me.
"I'm upset, Nova. Dylan is all the way over in Korea and I'm here. Underpaid, overworked and sex-less. I just—why does he have to be so far?" Her forehead dropped onto the mattress, muffling the sound coming from her mouth.
I cracked a smile, but her quick glare had me dropping any humour from my face.
Jade was scary when she needed to be. She was also asking if it was easy to find a man who wanted to take me home. Or maybe she was asking if it was easy to let loose. The answer was yes to both.
