The air was thick with excitement and a hint of disbelief as Jason hung up the phone. The lilac decorations that adorned the deck for Luna's birthday party suddenly felt like a distant memory, overshadowed by the monumental news he had just received. Elijah was coming back. The little boy they had loved, lost, and mourned was being given a second chance, and this time, they would not let him slip away.

Jason's heart raced as he waited for Michael to appear. He could almost hear the echo of Elijah's laughter, the way it lit up their home with joy. Memories of the brief time they had spent together flooded his mind—Elijah's tiny hands gripping his fingers, the way he would curl up against Michael on the couch, and the sweet sound of his voice calling out for them. It had all been taken away too soon, and the pain of that loss had lingered like a shadow over their lives.

When Michael burst through the door, his brow furrowed in confusion, Jason could hardly contain himself. "Elijah is coming home!" he exclaimed, his voice trembling with emotion. "Derek just called. Child services has him, and they want us to adopt him!"

For a moment, Michael stood frozen, disbelief etched across his face. Then, as if the weight of the news finally sank in, his expression transformed into one of pure joy. "Are you serious? Elijah? Our Elijah?" His voice cracked, and Jason could see the glimmer of tears forming in his partner's eyes.

"Yes! They want us to take him back!" Jason repeated, his own eyes brimming with tears. The two men embraced tightly, holding onto each other as if they were afraid to let go. The warmth of their shared joy enveloped them, pushing away the shadows of the past.

But as the initial excitement began to settle, a wave of apprehension washed over Jason. He pulled back slightly, looking into Michael's eyes. "What if he's changed? What if he doesn't remember us? What if he's been hurt?"

Michael cupped Jason's face in his hands, his gaze steady and reassuring. "We'll take it one step at a time. We loved him, and he loved us. That bond doesn't just disappear. He'll need us now more than ever, and we'll be there for him."

Jason nodded, feeling a flicker of hope ignite within him. They had faced the darkness once before, and now they were given a chance to step back into the light. "We need to prepare," he said, his mind racing with thoughts of how to welcome Elijah back into their lives. "We have to make sure he feels safe and loved."

As they turned back to the party preparations, the atmosphere shifted. The lilac decorations took on a new meaning, a celebration not just of Luna's birthday, but of the reunion that was about to unfold. They worked together, laughter and anticipation filling the air as they set up the tables, arranged the balloons, and placed the cake in the center of it all.

Time seemed to blur as they finished the last-minute details. The doorbell rang, signaling the arrival of their guests, but Jason's mind was elsewhere. He could hardly focus on the party, his thoughts consumed by the impending arrival of Elijah. Would he remember them? Would he be scared? Would he fit back into their family as if he had never left?

As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the deck, Jason and Michael exchanged glances filled with unspoken understanding. They were about to embark on a journey filled with uncertainty, but they were ready to face it together.

Finally, the moment arrived. Derek had promised to bring Elijah over after the party, and as the guests mingled and celebrated, Jason's heart raced with anticipation. He could hardly eat, his stomach a knot of nerves and excitement. Luna, blissfully unaware of the whirlwind of emotions surrounding her, giggled and played with her friends, her laughter ringing like music in Jason's ears.

And then, just as the last of the guests began to leave, Jason spotted Derek's car pulling into the driveway. His heart pounded in his chest as he exchanged a quick glance with Michael, who nodded, his own excitement palpable.
