~~ Part Two

Running is all we seem to be doing. I have no clue where we are going but I hope it is somewhere safe. I think we left way too early; we should've waiting til morning. It is too dark and silly I forgot to pack a flashlight. I'm surprised we haven't run into a tree or something. "Skye, my legs are hurting!" my sister whines. I stop her and look her in the eyes. "Kelli, you are a strong, brave little girl and you have to stay strong and brave if you want to be safe." I tell her. She nods, blinking away tears. This is definitely one thing an eight year-old girl should not be going through. I allow her to catch her breath before we are off running through the forest again. Luckily for us, we haven't been followed by a 'zombie' or even a helicopter. Not that I don't want to be rescued but a part of me does not trust the people in the helicopters. I hear a twig snap and all of a sudden my feet slip out from underneath me. "Skye, are you alright?" Kelli asks, kneeling beside me. I nod my head but the pain in my ankle was telling me otherwise. I stretch my leg out before standing up. I must've rolled my ankle on the way down. Pain shoots through my leg when I place weight on my ankle. Great, looks like I am going to be limping. Kelli goes to say something else when she was cut off by the sound of growling from behind us. Shit! I thought. They've found us! I pull my bag over my shoulder and begin to jog/limp away from the sound. I hear my sister panting and trying to control her breathing. Kelli has asthma and has trouble breathing when stressed out. I look at her to reassure myself that she wasn't going to pass out on me. Instead she continues to run, showing no fear. That's my sister! I smile but it fades immediately when I hear more growls to the right of us. Normally I would start running to the left but I knew there was going to be a time I would have to stand up and fight. I drop my bag on the ground and pull out my dad's katana. "Kelli, stay behind me okay." I demand, she listens and crouches beside my bag. I wait a few seconds as the growls and screeches become louder. Here they come. One of them comes out from behind the tree and heads straight towards me, I sigh in relieve to see how slow they are but for once it's quantity not quality. I raise the katana immediately and strike at the zombie, slicing through its neck. The head falls of the body and onto the dirt floor. Without thinking, I step on it to prevent any more noises coming out of its mouth. Thank god to those Walking Dead shows. I shove the katana back in its holder on my back. There must've only been one. I grab my bag and begin to walk off in the same direction as before. "How did you know how to use that sword?" I roll my eyes. "It is a katana, Kelli and I have seen people use it before, it is really not that hard." I tell her. Her eyes beam. "Can I try using it?" I laugh, shaking my head. "Of course you can." I answer, she gets excited but I cut her off. "When you're thirty years-old." I add jokingly. Her shoulders drop sadly. "But you're only seventeen." She whines. I ignore her. I just don't want my innocent little sister using this katana yet. There is growling in the distance behind us but I choose to ignore it, they aren't close enough to affect us yet. We come across what looks to be an abandoned barn. I make my way towards it but Kelli pulls on my arm. "What if there are people in there?" She asks. By people she means dead people. "Do you mean zombies?" I ask and she nods. "There won't be, it looks like no one has been here for a while, zombies would have no reason to be there." I hope what I am saying is true. We walk to the door of the barn. It has a lock. I slam my hand against the door. Kelli places her hand up to me revealing something small in her palm. I look down to see a bobby pin sprawled out in her hand. I smile at her. It was a worth a shot. I take the pin and start fiddling it inside the padlock of the barn. "Come on, come on." I whisper to myself. "Skye, hurry, they're coming." I look back to see about four or five of them coming our way. No, no, no. Not tonight. I fiddle with the lock a bit more. Please just open. Just as I was about to give up, the lock clicks open, allowing us to go in. Kelli runs in and I closed the door just in time. The zombies start banging on the door, growling, screeching and carrying on. The door should be secure enough for us to stay the night. The barn was empty besides the old black couch sitting up against the wall. "You tired?" I ask Kelli as she yawns. She walks over to the couch and lies down. I grab her backpack to see that she packed a blanket. I grab it and place it over her. She snuggles down with her teddy and starts dosing off. After tonight, it doesn't surprise me that her little body is worn out. I wish I could sleep but I know I won't be able to, especially with the sounds of the zombies banging on the barn door. I decide to get changed into my black tights and navy blue hoodie, it's freezing tonight. I lay down next to my sister, pulling the blanket over the both of us. Even though I can't sleep, I am still tired so I might just lie down and rest anyway. Who knows what tomorrow brings.
