The villa was quieter than usual today, but it was an odd kind of peace. The Mediterranean breeze whispered through the open windows, gently tousling Taylor's hair as she sat by the balcony, gazing out over the vast expanse of ocean that stretched endlessly toward the horizon. The sky was an ever-changing shade of pink and gold as the sun began to set, casting a soft glow across everything.
But underneath that calm exterior, Taylor could feel the change. The twins were moving more, their tiny limbs brushing against her ribs as if reminding her they were almost ready to meet the world. Her belly was heavy, round with the promise of two new lives. She had long since passed the "comfortable" stage of pregnancy. Now, it was just a matter of waiting for the inevitable.
Travis had been more protective than ever today. He couldn't seem to keep his hands off her, brushing her hair behind her ear, placing a hand on her belly, or simply sitting near her with a look of constant concern in his eyes. He was good at hiding his worry when the situation called for it, but today, it was different. It was in the way he looked at her, the way his gaze lingered just a bit too long, his lips slightly pressed together in a thoughtful line.
She smiled softly to herself, the warmth of his attention a small comfort in the midst of the physical discomfort she had been battling all day. She had tried to push through the occasional aches and pains, the tightening in her back and belly that seemed to increase as the day wore on. But now, as the evening crept in, she couldn't ignore it any longer. The contractions were subtle but growing closer together, though she wasn't ready to call the doctor just yet. She knew she had time, or at least, she hoped she did.
Travis entered the room quietly, his presence filling the space before he even spoke. He crouched down beside her, his large hand resting gently on her growing belly. His fingers moved softly, feeling for any shift or movement from the twins, but there was more to it—an undercurrent of tension that Taylor couldn't ignore.
"How are you feeling?" His voice was soft, but his eyes were alert, scanning her face for any sign of discomfort.
Taylor sighed, leaning into him, her body relaxing in the comfort of his presence. "I'm fine, Bear. Just tired and... a little sore. Nothing to worry about."
But even as she spoke, she knew deep down that things were changing. The ache in her lower back was persistent now, no longer just a fleeting feeling. It was a reminder that the time was near.
"Are you sure?" He pressed, his eyes narrowing slightly as he looked at her, the concern now fully visible in his expression. "You're not pushing yourself too hard, are you?"
She smiled at the concern in his voice, the way his brow furrowed when he asked. "I'm fine, really. Just... being impatient."
"You're sure?" Travis pressed once more, refusing to let go of his worry. He had been like this for weeks now, hovering just a little too close, watching her every move as if she might break at any moment.
"I'm sure," she reassured him, but even as the words left her lips, she could feel another contraction starting to build, low and tight in her abdomen. She winced, trying to keep her expression neutral, not wanting to worry him more than necessary.
"Taylor," Travis said, his voice dropping an octave, "If it's time, we need to call the doctor."
Before she could respond, she heard footsteps approaching from behind. Brittany walked into the room, her eyes quickly scanning the scene as she saw Taylor sitting with Travis, the quiet tension in the air.
"Everything alright?" Brittany asked, her tone light but concerned.
Taylor smiled up at her, trying to brush off the growing discomfort. "Just a little tired. The twins are getting restless."
Brittany arched an eyebrow, clearly not buying the easy excuse. She walked over and knelt beside them. "You sure? You're not trying to tough it out, are you?"
Taylor shook her head, though a small pang of discomfort surged through her at that exact moment. She winced, her grip on Travis tightening.
Brittany's eyes narrowed. "You're not fooling me, Taylor. Something's going on."
Travis shot her a concerned look. "She's fine. She says it's just discomfort, but..." His voice trailed off as he looked at Taylor, his protective instincts kicking into full gear. "But if you're not feeling right, I think it's time we get the doctor involved."
Taylor's breath hitched slightly as another wave of discomfort rolled through her, sharper now, and it was becoming harder to ignore. She looked at him, her hand still on her belly as she nodded slowly. "Yeah, it's time. I don't think I can ignore it anymore."
Travis immediately stood, moving toward the phone with quick strides. But Brittany held Taylor's gaze, her expression softening as she offered her hand.
"Let me help you," Brittany said quietly. "I'm going to stay with you, alright? You don't have to go through this alone."
Taylor gave a small nod, feeling a sense of relief at her friend's offer. As much as she loved Travis's attention, she knew Brittany's calming presence would help too.
Travis quickly made the call, his voice low and urgent. The moment he hung up, he was back at her side, kneeling in front of her.
"The doctor's on his way," Travis said, his voice low but firm. "We're going to be fine, Angel. Just breathe, okay? Focus on me."
Taylor smiled faintly, but the calm in her expression was at odds with the storm of emotions swirling inside. "I'm fine, Bear. Just... ready. I want to meet them already."
"I know," he replied, his voice thick with emotion. He cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs brushing her cheek as he searched her eyes. "I can't wait either. But I need you to take a deep breath, alright? We're in this together."
Brittany gave Taylor's shoulder a gentle squeeze before standing. "I'm going to go check on the kids. You two need anything, just let me know."
As Brittany left the room, Taylor settled back into the cushions, her breathing becoming steadier. The contractions weren't unbearable, but they were definitely growing stronger, coming more frequently. There was no turning back now.
Travis watched her intently, refusing to let her out of his sight for a single second. He had been so protective over the last few months, but this was different. This wasn't just about keeping her safe; it was about making sure she felt supported, that she knew she wasn't alone.
"I'm not leaving your side, Taylor," he whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.
"I know," she whispered back, her voice full of tenderness. "I'll be okay. Just... stay close."
The sun continued its descent, casting a golden light over the villa as the evening stretched on. It was the calm before the storm, but Taylor knew that with Travis by her side, she could face whatever was coming. Together, they would bring their twins into the world, and nothing would stop them. Not now, not ever.
