Chapter 84
I overslept the next morning. Unfortunately, it was for a totally different reason than yesterday. Still, it felt good to have accomplished something. I hadn't stayed up to punish myself like I used to do. Small victories, really.
Unfortunately for me, though, I got up too late to pick up my girlfriend so we met up at school. I caught up with her at her locker once I got there.
She greeted me with a kiss and a smile.
My whole chest radiated with happiness.
I was also maybe a little bit slap happy because of the lack of sleep. Maybe just a little bit.
"Tired?" Lexi asked with an amused smile.
I grinned back at her and hugged her close to me.
I wanted to nuzzle against her neck and be done with school. I wanted to cuddle against her, and catch up on all the sleeping I had missed in the last decade.
"Usually when you're sleep deprived, you're moody. It's been a while since I've seen you being all jolly about it," Lexi teased me, running her hand through my hair.
It was crazy how such a simple little touch could revive me so thoroughly.
I kept grinning, taking my phone out of my pocket.
"I did a thing," I admitted a little sheepishly.
"Should I be worried?" Lexi asked, looking at me endearingly.
"Maybe only in the sense that if I go down this path, your future husband might become one of those broke artists parents warn their kids about."
"Oh, the tragedy. I will definitely only marry you for the money," she joked.
I took out my earphones and gave them to Lexi and then played her one of the best recordings I had gotten of the piece I had written.
I stared at her while holding my breath, waiting for her criticism.
I wasn't exactly sure why I was so worried about how she would react to my piece of music. Lexi had never been anything but supportive when it came to things that I was passionate about. Our bantering was never about actually putting the other down. Lexi loved me. Even if she didn't like what she was hearing, she wouldn't make fun of me.
But this was something new for me. I hadn't played much music over the years, and I'd never written anything before.
Just because it sounded nice in my head didn't mean it would to others.
Lexi stayed concentrated while listening to the whole piece, her face giving nothing away.
Once it was over, she looked up at me and asked, "Can I listen to it again?"
"Please don't tell me if you hate it. I don't think my poor heart could cope with it," I whined, starting it up again.
Lexi rolled her eyes at me, patting my cheek. "You think I would want to listen to it again if I didn't like it?"
"I don't know, maybe you're trying to convince yourself you like it," I continued whining.
Lexi chuckled, and put a finger to her lips, telling me to shut up. "Stop worrying."
She listened to it again, but this time she was smiling and once she was done, gave me my earphones back. "It's really unfair that you're always so good at everything," she simply stated.
"So? You like it?"
Lexi rolled her eyes at me. "Yes Blake, I love your song,"
I let out a relieved breath. Lexi gave me an amused smile. "Did you let your father listen to it?"
