Chapter 5: Twists And Turns And A Million Words

Walking up to my house I had one thing on my mind and that was my mom. She would know what to do and say in this situation. She would know how to approach the topic of Jeremy Kings. She would know what was best for me right now. She was my mom, related by blood or not, she was the woman that hugged me when I scraped my leg riding my bike, gave me boy advice and helped through the hard first break up in the second grade with Jack Miller. She would be the person best suited to get my mind to a better state than it was at the moment.

I walked up the steps on the front porch of the veranda and timidly opened the front door to see my mother nervously perched on the staircase. Once she saw me relief flooded her worried features as she practically jumped up and embraced me in the type of hug only a mother could give.

"Oh Mia, I was so worried. I thought you were never going to come back. You've been gone for hours and you didn't take your phone with you," she wept emotionally into my ear.

Tears were still trailing down my face as my mom released me. She looked at me sympathetically before taking my hand and bringing me to the living room which was thankfully vacant at the moment, "Talk to me," she softly demanded crossing her legs like a pretzel facing me, to which I did the same.

"I ran into Jeremy," a fresh round of tears replenished my face with their salty moisture, "I don't know why I'm crying, honestly it's kind of pathetic. I just, I don't know, I wish he never came back. I'm finally getting my groove back in life without him as an influence to every move that I make, and now that he's back I feel like I'm going to lose that control that I have gained," I explained as I wiped the last of my tears.

"Sweetie he isn't worth your tears. You have gained so much confidence in this past year once he left and I am immensely proud of you for that. You didn't deserve what he put you through, and he never deserved you in the first place," she said boldly. She was angered with him, that was obvious, but it was merely due to the fact that he just up and left one day. She didn't know about the physical abuse, nor would she any time in the near future.

I nodded my head to what she had said believing every word uttered and leaned forward hugging her, "I love you mom."

"I love you too sweetheart," she whispered with tears in her voice.

In the midst of the moment we both faintly heard dad call for her from upstairs, so with apologetic eyes and a kiss to the forehead she got up from the couch and made her way to wherever dad was. I on the other hand grabbed the blanket from the top of the couch and the large pillow leaning against the armrest and cuddled myself to sleep; suddenly all the tears caught up to me and exhaustion took over.

I woke up hours later to the silence of an empty house. I stood up and stretched out my muscles, and made my way to the kitchen for a glass of water. I took the glass and sat down on the island stool seeing a note that was left, appearing to be in mom's handwriting.

'I hope that your nap was well spent, it looked like you needed it. Anyways, Frank went out for the night with some friends and your father and I were invited out to a dinner with one of your father's colleagues so I wouldn't expect any of us home until late, well, early technically. Regardless, I went out and bought you some pizza, it has vegetables-no mushrooms- don't worry ;) Love you baby girl. Call me if you need anything. Xoxo -mum

I smiled down at the note in front of me. My mother is one to be desired. I placed the note aside and glanced at the clock, 7:27. Well I guess that nap took over my day. I shrugged nonchalantly, and got up to look in the fridge for this mysterious pizza that was rumored to be there. With pizza in sight and the microwave only half a foot away I quickly placed a napkin over top of my food and began to heat it up.

A few seconds into the reheating the front door opened. I leaned my head back just in time to see my brother walk in with someone. He came into the kitchen alone while his friend waited at the door, "Mi have you seen my walle- there it is" he grabbed his black leather wallet from beside the fridge and swiftly made his way to the stairs telling his friend he will be back in a minute.

"Glad I could help," I softly yelled up to him to which he chuckled.

As soon as my attention was brought back to the pizza, the microwave stared to beep indicating the end of the cycle. Opening the door I took out the plate and the napkin fell to the floor, 'oh well I'll get it later' I had thought to myself. I leaned over the counter to retrieve my glass to fill it once again, but as I went to take a step towards the sink my foot slipped out from under me. The glass fell to the ground along with me smashing into thousands of little pieces, 'stupid napkin' I thought to myself.

As I was attempting to get up from my embarrassing face plant, a hand reached out in front of my face. I looked to see the owner of the hand and I recognized him as one of the many friends that Frank has had over at the house before.

My cheeks rapidly flamed due to the situation, and the fact that I couldn't remember his name. I took a hold of his hand, much larger than mine, allowing him to assist me to pull me up vertically once again, careful not to step on the glass which surrounded us.

"Thank you," I replied still extremely embarrassed, and most certainly red from an irritating blush.

He smiled a small smile, "no problem."

After that the silence around us got insanely awkward. Great.

I just stood there nodding my head like an idiot biting my lip out of nervousness in the situation, while he stood there just as awkwardly. 'would Frank hurry up and get down here please?'

Just as the thoughts ran through my head my dear brother appeared and taking in the awkward silence, then the glass on the floor, "what happened in here?" he asked me.

"I may or may not have accidentally dropped a glass and may or may not have dropped right along with it," I admitted glumly.

All he did was laugh at me, some brother, "well you have fun cleaning that, don't cut yourself, and Drew and I will be on our way. My phone won't be on so don't call me, see you later," he left with that innocent face that he could just never pull off and headed towards the door, leaving, probably going out to start his truck.

I noticed that Drew hadn't moved from where he was standing yet, "Thank you again," I told him. He just smiled and nodded at me again and began making his way to the door, stealing glances at me with his bright hazel eyes. I looked away from him and pondered how to get out of the glass infested area to go find some type of footwear so that I could clean the mess. But I was literally stuck, fantastic.

Just as I was about to attempt jumping to the island, a hand lightly grabbed my arm immediately stopping all motion. I looked up to see that Drew was still there in the kitchen. I looked at him confused for a moment, scrunching up my eyebrows. He just shook his head before looking at me in question. I tried to understand what he was indicating but I was a lost cause when it came to hidden messages. He smiled lightly, shook his head again, and came closer to me, lifting me up, which caused me to tense for a second, eyes widening before he walked around to the other side of the kitchen placing me down again where there was no glass around.

I looked up to meet his gaze and was in a trance. Cheesy I know but his eyes were like gold, mesmerizing.

No other words were uttered as he let me go and walked out the front door, looking back my way just before it closed.

A man of few words, just caused a million to start running through my head.
