(short but so so sweet <3)

6th November, 2022 - Los Angeles, California

August sat in his bed, his hands clutching onto the small card he'd made Lux earlier today. It was a masterpiece of crayon colours and uneven letters that spelled out 'GET WELL SOON LUX'. He'd even drawn a big sun in the corner because as far as he was concerned, the sun always made people feel better.

It was 1:48am but he didn't care. The young boys mind was focused on one thing and one thing only. Delivering this card to his sister.

He swung his legs over the side of his bed, the card still clutched tightly in his small hands. The moonlight filtering through his curtains and the soft luminescence of his nightlight casted a soft glow over his room - just bright enough for him to be able to make it out without tripping or bumping into anything.

He tiptoed across the hallway, his bare feet making soft pats against the cool hardwood floor. Occasionally, he would stop still, listing to make sure his daddies were still asleep but every time, he was met with the reassuring sound of silence.

His little heart thudded with excitement, his small chest puffed up with pride as he thought of how happy Lux would be when she saw his card. He didn't feel quite as little as he usually did. It was nice.

When he reached Lux's room, the door was slightly ajar. August peeked through the crack, spotting Lux almost immediately. She was curled up in her blankets, her tiny body barely making a dent in the bed. Her pacifier had been discarded to the side and was replaced with her thumb, which she was gently sucking on in her sleep. Her cheeks were still faintly flushed from the fever, but her breathing was soft and even. She looked peaceful.

August hesitated for a moment, clutching the card tighter. He didn't want to wake her if she was still not feeling well, but he was determined to give her the card. After all, he had worked so hard on it, and Lux seemed like she could benefit from one of his pretty cards.

He inched into the room as quietly as he could, his small feet careful to avoid making any noise.

When he was close enough, he stopped beside her bed. For a moment, he just stood there, watching her. Lux's hair was messy and splayed across the pillow, her small frame bundled tightly under the covers. August thought she looked so small and cozy, like the dolls he sometimes played with.

"Luxie," he whispered softly, leaning down toward her. "Made you a card."

Lux stirred slightly at the sound of his voice, her eyes fluttering open just a bit. She blinked sleepily, her gaze finding August's little figure standing by her bedside. "Auggie?" she murmured, her voice soft and scratchy.

"Yeah, s'me" he said, his voice just as soft. "I made this for you." He held out the card, his grin wide and proud even in the dim light. "It says, 'Get well soon.' And look! I put a sun on it 'cause the sun makes everything better."

Lux squinted at the card, her sleepy eyes trying to focus. She reached out a small hand and took it from him, her lips curving into a faint smile as she looked at the colorful scribbles. "Sun's pretty," she murmured. "Thank you."

August beamed, his chest swelling with pride. "You're welcome! Do you feel better now? Does the card work?"

Lux nodded slowly, clutching the card to her chest. "Feel better," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

August's grin widened, his small frame almost bouncing with joy at her words. "It worked!" he whispered excitedly, clapping his hands softly.

Lux let out a tiny giggle, the sound faint but genuine, and it made August's heart feel like it might burst. He was proud of himself for cheering her up, even if just a little.

He leaned closer, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead, just like he'd seen their daddies do so many times. "G'night, Luxie," he whispered, his voice full of affection. "Sleep good so you can get all better."

"Wait, Auggie.." Lux mumbles, just as he turns to leave. "Sleep with me?"

August hesitated for a moment, glancing toward the door as if checking to see if their daddies would appear and scold him for being out of bed. But when the quiet of the house remained undisturbed, he turned back to Lux, her wide, sleepy eyes blinking up at him.

How could he possibly say no to her? She looked so small, so warm, and so inviting.

"Okay," he whispered, climbing up onto the bed with as much stealth as his tiny frame would allow. He wriggled under the covers beside her, careful not to jostle her too much. Lux scooted closer to him, her little hand clutching the card he'd given her as she rested her head against his arm.

August wrapped his arms around her in a protective hug, just like he'd seen their daddies do when either of them was upset. "I'm here now, Luxie. Don't worry, okay?" he said softly, his voice full of sincerity. "I'll keep you safe while you sleep."

Lux hummed softly in response, her thumb finding its way back into her mouth as she nuzzled against the older boy. She felt warm and safe in his embrace, and despite her lingering fever, the ache in her chest felt a little lighter now.

"You gotta feel better soon, Luxie," he whispered. "'Cause I miss playing with you, and daddies say you're the best at building towers with me."

Lux let out a quiet giggle around her thumb, her eyelids fluttering shut again. "Missed you too," she murmured, her voice sleepy. "Best towers."

August grinned, clearly pleased with himself. "Yeah, we'll make the biggest one ever. Bigger than the couch!"

"Mhm," Lux agreed faintly, her breathing evening out again as she drifted closer to sleep.

August yawned softly, suddenly realizing how tired he was now that he was settled. But he wasn't ready to let go of his sister just yet. Instead, he tightened his arms around her slightly, his head resting on the pillow beside hers.

Within moments, the two siblings were fast asleep, curled up together under the soft blankets. Lux still clutched the colorful card to her chest, her little body tucked against her older brother's. August's arm remained protectively around her, his small chest rising and falling in rhythm with hers.

It was a tender scene, one of those rare, quiet moments that would stay etched in their daddies' hearts forever - if only they could see it.

But for now, the house remained silent, the night peaceful, and the two littles safe in each other's warmth.
