"Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose"

As the sun rose, Piper opened her eyes; the camp bed felt foreign underneath her. It wasn't until she grasped empty air reaching for her ever-present water that her mind caught up with the fact that she was miles from home. Swiping her phone awake she read the time: 6:28am.
Right now, her babies would be at Saturday morning practice. She wondered how Lindy was fairing with her speed. They'd been working on cutting down her goal-to-goal sprint time. Her mind shifted to Erin and how her dribbling had improved. Erin was beginning to take their practices to heart.
Stretching, her back arched off the bed, her feet dug into the hard mattress, Piper rolled over to tumble out of her bed to the bathroom connected to her room. She pulled back the shower curtain only to be greeted with a ball of hair clogging the drain; dirt and mold cascaded down the side. Piper shivered in disgust. Throwing her essentials in her make up bag, she grabbed her towel and pushed through the adjoining rooms to Mac's cabin. Hopefully his bathroom wasn't as bad as hers. She didn't bother to call out to him knowing that he was already out running. With St Joe's early start, he was an early riser. Piper scoffed at the already made up bed
She slowed as she passed his bed remembering the end of last night. She still felt a little raw about opening up, and yet she still felt pleased about it. She didn't regret holding on to him when he offered.
She remembered his voice close to her ear saying, "I would've taken her place," as he pressed his lips to hers. She didn't fight it or pull away. She fell into him. It wasn't a kiss of passion; just comfort, letting her know he was there. Falling from the kiss to his shoulder, she heard him ask. "Would you have told me this if you didn't think I died?"
There were a lot of things she wouldn't have told him if the crash hadn't woken up her morals. She didn't answer just rubbed her nose into his shirt. Piper still remembered the feeling of embarrassment over her hysteria. She had been hoping he didn't remember her feverish fear. "Sorry for freaking out."
"Glad you can be human." His breath warmed her neck.
With that she had held him closer. She would be strong and defensive and aloof later. She had needed this soft moment.
"Sleep with me." Piper thought she misheard him, she moved her head so fast she nearly collided with his. She glared at him with a raised eyebrow and her mother's I-can't-believe-you-just-said-that head tilt.
He had the audacity to laugh. "We are going to work on this low image of me. Stay tonight. I know you get nightmares. I can hear them at home."
Piper had shaken her head. She pulled her arms from around him knowing that it was time to put a little distance between them before she told him the root of her nightmares. She shared a sensitive subject with him, worried about the outcome, and he was already moving onto the next open wound. Couldn't she catch a break?
"Your mom said not to bring it up." He hadn't moved any closer to her; he understood when he'd gone too far.
"You plan on chasing them away?" She referred to her nightmares, wondering if he could have the same effect on her fears.
"And beat the shit out of them."
Piper held her towel tighter as her mind fell back into the present. Her heart felt lighter; her soul brighter and pure.
Shaking off the memory, Piper invaded Mac's privacy heading to his bathroom. With bathroom ebing considerably cleaner than her cabin's, Piper emptied her bag and began her bathroom routine. Between washing her face and brushing her teeth, she fingered his contact case, reminded of what he looked like with his dark rimmed glasses. He'd been so insecure about them after she made it her mission to have the neighborhood pick on him for his nerd shades.
