As they rode back from the clearing, Piper couldn't help but look back and see the slight indentation from where their bodies had lain. Other than that minor impression in the grass, the clearing looked untouched, as if it wasn't the setting of her life changing.
Parking their bikes in the garage, Piper let Mac put his arm around her shoulders as they walked into the house. For a small instant, Piper admitted to herself that something in her shifted. It was a big shift, a monumental moment that was so beautiful it was horrifying. She only knew that she didn't mind the masculine possessive move he was exhibiting over her as much as she should have.
It even made her feel safe. Running her hands over her arms, she didn't know how important that was to her. As an army brat, she understood that the edge of danger was closer than people wanted to admit.
She consistently told herself that she could keep herself safe and sane, but that seemed to be harder than she thought. The aftermath of being Gloria's junior, when she really needed family, made her realize how small her world was. She didn't have that safety line of attentive parents though she was sure if Pamela found out, she would have annihilated Gloria, sick or not.
Mac opened the door to their friends screeching and yelling over a game of beer pong. It made for a normal teenage scene that soothed Piper. Sean was leaning against the bar with Casey resting against him while Ace had his eyes on Lindy as she sunk her pong in the island solo cup. The noise went up in an uproar as they guys congratulated a surprised Lindy. Piper felt Mac's chuckle as Lindy looked so uncomfortable as the guys rallied around her drunkenly singing an inaccurate rendition of "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow."
Ace was the first to notice their entrance. He sent a wink to Mac and yelled across the room. "Where have you guys been?"
The room focused their attention on Mac and Piper paying close attention to the arm around Piper's shoulder. Sean spoke up first. "Is there a reason she hasn't chewed off your arm yet?"
Piper rolled her eyes as Mac slid his arm down her back to rest at his side. "I guess I shouldn't press my luck. We call winner, finish the game."
She watched recognition spark in Casey's eyes and Piper wondered if the electrified air surrounding her and Mac could be seen by their friends.
Casey's eyes slipped to Mac. "You plan on drinking all those cups?" Her voice was defensive as if nobody in the room knew that Piper didn't drink.
Mac's arrogance was gentle in return, "I doubt they'll be any cups to drink."
Suspicion caught Casey's full body and Piper knew she made a big mistake by not saying anything since they walked in. It just showed how off kilter sex with her childhood enemy made her.
Moving with a mission on her mind, Casey peeled herself off Sean and made her way to Piper. Movement in her peripheral caught her attention as Mac moved away from her. Oh no, she wasn't getting caught in 'The Talk' again.
Snagging his hand, she whispered fast as Casey moved around the couches. "Where do you think you're going?"
"I'm pretty sure the moment she gets over here she's going to smell me all over you. I'm too exhausted to get the third degree and not in the mood for girl talk about how big my—"
"You arrogant tool, you're just as much to blame." Casey was moving fast and Mac was wrestling his hand out of hers. "No, stop. You can't leave me like this."
