~Sienna

I'm thrown down violently and suddenly, the heels of my palms bruising against the slick cobblestones.

Turning around, I scramble backward until my back hits the alley wall. Two men loom over me, their faces shadowed as the moon hangs thick and full behind them.

"Don't even think about getting up," one of them growls. They have a crooked nose and impossibly dark eyes.

The other one holds a short wooden bat with a carved handle. My stomach twists and contracts from fear as I press myself as tightly against the wall as possible.

"What are you doing?" I question, my fingers digging into the gaps between the bricks below me.

The one with the bat crouches down before me. "We need to have a little chat, Sienna."

I grimace. They know me, which isn't a good sign. This has something to do with Onyx, with me becoming his wife. People are coming to realise I'm nothing more than an orphan girl who got lucky being brought in by the Alpha, who then fell in love with her.

Finally, everything terrible is catching up to me.

"Please don't do this," I plead, my voice strangled. "I haven't done anything wrong."

"Are you afraid?" The man with the bat asks, his teeth flashes bright white as he grins at me.

I swallow thickly. "I...yes."

I wish I recognised them. I wish they were more than shadowed faces with dull features and sadistic smiles. None of it will matter, though, if they decide they want to kill me.

"You should never have come back to this pack. If you hadn't, this wouldn't be happening right now," crooked nose states, his eyes roving over me, making me curl my legs up closer to my body.

I need to be ready to fight. By nature I'm no fighter, and have avoided conflict for most of my life. But if I have to fight for my life, I'll do it. I won't go down easy.

"Are you working with Christian?" I ask shakily.

This sadistic intimidation technique must have something to do with him. He probably set this up to kill me off without it being linked back to him.

The men exchange uncertain glances.

"We aren't working with anyone," the man with the bat responds tightly. "It is important, however, that you learn some things about us before we kill you."

My heart launches into my throat, fear constricting my breath. No. No.

"Kill me?" I gasp. "Why would you kill me?"

"Why do you think, huh?" He snaps, his anger flaring as I'm a fool for not seeing it. "Do you truly believe you are capable of being our Luna? This pack has known peace since Onyx became Alpha, and you are going to destroy it."

My harsh, panicked breathing is filling the night air. I knew that they were targeting me because of Onyx and I's recent nuptials.

"I would never do anything to harm this pack. Peace is all I want!" I insist.

The man with the crooked nods steps forward and crouches. He moves so quickly I can barely see what he is doing as one hand takes something from his back pocket, while the other grabs my wrist.

My scream is shrill and sudden, echoing down the abandoned alleyway as he slices down my palm the blade of a knife he produced seemingly from nowhere.

Blood immediately wells and spills down either side of my hand, splattering against the cobblestone.

"This blood is tainted by Zion. You belong in your own pack when Onyx inevitably destroys it," he hisses, dropping my hand suddenly.

I cradle my shaky hand to my chest as he mercifully backs off.

The pain from the cut is overwhelming. It fills the space in my mind which is trying to grapple with the new information he's fed me.

I'm here, facing death because of who I am to Zion. Members of this pack cannot bear to have someone related to their greatest enemy helping lead their pack.

And I can't blame them.

"I'm not Zion's daughter...not really—"

"We've heard what he has said. You are the rightful heir to his power," the man with the bat says. "How can you be a Luna here and yet entitled to Zion's land at the same time?"

"I don't want Zion's land! I want to be here, with my mate!"

This is hopeless. They'll never believe me — they have no reason to. To them, I'm nothing more than traitorous scum who supposedly married another enemy, only to return to marry their Alpha.

"You are not my Alpha's mate. I don't know what trickery you've used to delude him into thinking you are, but we know the truth." The man flicks the knife in his hand before using it to gesture between the two of them. "The people of this pack know the truth."

I hang my head, watching the blood pump relentlessly from my hand. It's not slowing down, although the pain is edged with numbness now.

I glower up at them. "You cannot take our bond away, regardless of how much you hate me."

"You took Violet from us. She was a good Luna, she belonged here," the man with the bat snaps. "You are the daughter of our enemy. You have no place here."

They are right, I know they are right...But there is no part of me that will ever give up on this pack, on Onyx. I love him too deeply for that.

"So what, you're just going to kill me? How do you think Onyx will react if you do this?" I question.

They can't begin to conceive of his reaction if my body is found in this alleyway at dawn. He will never stop until he's found these two men, and once he has, their deaths will be endless and painful.

"This is a sacrifice we are willing to make for the safety of this pack and the preservation of the Alpha's line."

"You could kill him by doing this...please don't do this," I plead.

All I can think of is his heartache, his grief. They will lose their Alpha forever. He's lost so much in his life already. He wouldn't able to handle losing his mate, especially not like this.

"We'll finally reveal the faux bond you are using to manipulate him," crooked nose hisses, looking over me as if he can physically see it.

I shake my head. "This is a mistake..."

Crooked nose looks at his friend, a flash of uncertainty passing over his face. The reality is settling down upon him, especially after I've laid out what the consequences will be.

"Are you going to do it, or should I?" He asks.

The man with the bat holds his hand out for the knife. "Let me. I've been waiting for this day since Zion announced she was his daughter."

"Better make it quick so we can put as much distance between Alpha Onyx and her body. Let him think she's gone missing."

I watch the interaction with wide eyes, looking behind them for a way to escape. Their wide bodies block my way, however, and if I get up, I'll be running right into that knife.

Once they are close, I'll make my move.

Before the knife exchanges hands, someone else appears from behind the corner. They don't hesitate, as if they were waiting for this, anticipating coming across this in the dead of night.

Even in the shadows, I recognise them. It's Christian, his gaze hooded, his hands gloved as he advances on the two men who are entirely unaware of his presence.

"I think that's enough of that," he says by way of announcement.

He's behind one of the men so suddenly I miss it with a blink. What I don't miss, however, is his own knife coming around the slice the man's throat in one swift movement.

I scream as a torrent of blood spills from his throat, and through the fingers that reach up to clutch the wound. The man's eyes are wide and tormented as he falls to his knees, his grip on the knife loosening before it clatters to the ground.

He lands face first on the cobblestones with a sickening thud, his nose cracking.

Scrambling up the wall, I watch as the man with the bat tackles Christian down, forcing him down onto the ground.

At any other moment, I would relish in watching Christian being punched relentlessly in the face, over and over again. However, as the man's hand latches around his neck, pressing down until Christians gasp is nothing more than strangled air, I know I need to do something.

My gaze falls to the knife lying on the ground by the dead man's head.

I reach for it, still feeling the heat in the handle from where he was gripping it only moments ago. It has a sour feeling spreading through my stomach, but I fight it off as I turn my attention to Christian being strangled.

His face is bright red, his eyes wide as he claws at his attackers head.

I should let him die...

The thought is strong but fleeting. For some reason, the urge to end this thumps through my brain, pressing back the need for revenge.

As if controlled by a phantom force, I stride forward and stab the knife through the man's back.

He freezes, his grip loosening on Christian's neck. Christian shoves him off, the man falling limp as he sprawls out across the ground.

I stare at his face, at the life draining from it.

His eyes meet mine, cold and distant. I'm too numb to feel anything, to feel even a flutter of regret.

"I think I just killed someone..." I whisper.

Christian leans over, holding his throat as he violently coughs. I wince as he spits on the ground before standing, sliding the knife from the man's back in the same movement.

"I knew you had it in you," he forces out, his voice rough and hoarse.

"I should have killed you." I look down at my bleeding hand, and then at the one I used to take that man's life. "You deserve to die."

No one would have questioned it has I killed him. Sure, if anything happened to him, there's a chance there are people he knows who get revenge on me, but at least he would be gone, and so would the threat against Alex and Onyx.

"I know." He smirks, wiping his bloodied hands against his pants. "You could have let him choke me out, as well."

"I...I don't know I didn't wait. I should have waited."

"You did the right thing." He carefully steps over one dead body. "And you owed me anyway. I did save your life."

Looking down at my feet, I see the blood from the man's slit throat pooling in the cracks of the cobblestones, trailing closer to my feet.

"You killed my mother. How could I possibly owe you?" I growl.

"I'm doing you a favour, believe it or not." His expression sobers, a coolness weaving into his gaze that makes my stomach drop. "Everything I'm doing is for you, for us. You should be thanking me."

My eyes narrow. "For what, exactly?"

He pauses, his mouth twisting. Finally, he slides the other knife to join his one in his pocket, finalising the events of this night.

"Go home. Tell your precious Alpha you were attacked." He looks down at my hand, and then at the bodies. "But these people are right, you don't belong here."

I scowl. "You don't—"

He holds up his hand to silence me, but it's the seriousness in his expression that keeps me quiet.

"Sienna. They will never accept you."
