This is a miserable night.

My feet are wedged into shoes that are a size too small, my toes completely numb. My dress is itchy and foreign feeling and Alston's hands on my waist feel heavy and hot.

As if the public humiliation of being announced as Alston's future wide wasn't enough, I have been dancing with him while every watches on with blatant curiosity.

I can't even imagine what they think of me...everyone knows I was Onyx's mistress, and now it's been revealed that I'm Zion's daughter and marrying Alston.

And Onyx...I feel the worst about him.

I've felt his stare on me as I've danced. He's handling his anger surprisingly well, but everyone in this room can sense that he's moments away from losing control.

So as I see him approach, a hardened sense of determination apparent, I'm convinced he's going to snap, but he merely brushes by, bumping Alston to the side.

I break out of Alston's grasp, my pulse thumping against my temples.

"My bad," he says smoothly to an irritated Alston before his attention shifts to me. "Can I speak to you?"

I open my mouth to agree but Alston grabs Onyx's arm, pinning him with a glare.

"We're dancing," he seethes through his teeth, looking around to force onlookers to look away. None of us want to be the focal point of everyone's tired gossip.

"There is limited time," Onyx mutters under his breath, looking over Alston's shoulder. "Zion is distracted."

I follow his gaze to see my father, who has been watching us the entire time we've been dancing, is now facing Alpha Maren. She traces her finger down his chest, a sultry smile on her face that makes my stomach turn.

If anyone is going to be effective at distracting Zion, it's Maren.

Alston rubs his jaw tensely, torn. I wait anxiously for his answer, sidling closer to my mate with every passing second, needing to be alone with him.

"Fine. One of you leave at a time, and be quick," Alston bites out, nodding his head toward the door.

Onyx departs swiftly, weaving through the crowd toward the door. I watch his back as he walks away, pretending to resume dancing with Alston before quietly excusing myself a couple minutes later.

The cool air in the outside corridor gives me a chance to breathe, the tight grip of everyone's gazes finally releasing.

I stride down the hallway, searching passively for my mate. I'm anxious to see him again, to feel his arms around me.

A hand suddenly reaches out from behind a random door, tugging me into a dim room.

I yelp as the door slams closed and I'm pressed against the nearest wall by Onyx, nearly knocking a painting off the wall.

"Hey..." I breathe, reaching out to touch his face, brushing stray strands of hair off his temples.

My entire body relaxes, his presence alone soothing me. I hate that these moments together are stolen, as if this relationship is forbidden. We are meant to be together, and we are being forced apart by terrible forces.

"I missed you." He leans forward, resting his forehead against mine.

I tilt my head up. "Kiss me."

He leans back a touch, grimacing. "I need to tell you something."
