The stone walls seemed to whisper with history as the first year students eagerly followed Professor McGonagall down the long, torch-lit corridor. The Headmistress' tartan robes swished as she led them forward with brisk steps, her heels clicking sharply on the hard floor. The glow of the torches cast flickering shadows across the students' excited faces. Rose's fingers fiddled nervously with the envelope in her robe pocket. Hugo and Albus were a few steps ahead of her. They were laughing about something - probably some prank they'd already planned for their first night at Hogwarts - but she couldn't focus on the words that they were saying, her thoughts constantly drifting back to the letter.
"You are the child from the prophecy," her mother's voice echoed in her head.
"Only you can save us from Garfantell."
Rose's fingers absentmindedly traced the edges of the envelope again as she walked, the paper smooth beneath her touch. Suddenly, the envelope slipped from her pocket and fluttered to the ground, landing softly on the stone floor with barely a sound.
Before she could even react, a pale hand appeared, quickly snatching it up.
It was Scorpius.
Rose blinked in surprise as he straightened up, his blue eyes briefly meeting hers. His expression was nervous, his cheeks flushed, but his hands were steady as he handed the envelope back to her.
Their fingers brushed for a fraction of a second, and Rose's heart skipped, though she didn't quite understand why.
Scorpius didn't say anything, just nodded awkwardly before rushing ahead to catch up with the rest of the students. His back remained hunched as he hurried away, clearly trying to avoid drawing any attention to himself.
Rose stared after him for a moment, unsure of what to make of the interaction. Scorpius wasn't someone she knew well, but there was something unexpectedly kind in the way he had picked up the envelope for her, without a second thought, especially considering their families' history as enemies... She felt a strange mix of gratitude and something else - a flicker of something she couldn't quite put her finger on. She blinked, slightly flustered, and quickly stuffed the envelope back into her pocket, tucking it deeper than before, determined not to let it fall out again.
She then hurried to catch up with Hugo and Albus, who were too absorbed in their conversation to notice her fall behind.
