I sat in a guest bedroom that Jack locked me in so he could go get me some clothes. I looked around the room, it was beautiful, it has a kings size bed, two dressers, a walk in closet, pictures hanging everywhere, with a baby blue painted walls, and hard wood floors. It also had a forgin object to me. It was huge, rectangular, and black on the wall across from the bed. It had big power button on it. I got up to look at it more closely when a girl barged in.
She was about my age with blonde perfect curls falling down her back, blue eyes and was perfectly proportioned. A hint of envy went through my system but I quickly squashed it.
We stared at eachother for a moment. I didn't know what she was doing but I was sizeing her up.
I decided to break the awkward silence after another minute. I pointed to the thing on the wall, "What's that?"
Her eyebrows flew up in shock at my question. "Are you serious? What have you been living under a rock or something?" She asked.
I grinded my teeth. "Or something."
"It's a TV." She said with confusion written on her face.
I looked back to the TV on the wall in utter amazement. When I was a kid we had the dinosaur one compared to this.
I shuffled back in forth uncomfortable with the situation. "Do you have clothes or..." I said refering to the things in her hands.
"Oh ya. Here." She handed me a T-Shirt, a skirt, and some high heeled shoes.
"Um... I don't mean to be rude but can I have something like pants and a turtleneck? And gloves if you have them?" I asked.
"But you'll look so cute with this on." She pouted. I felt bad, I mean she's not being mean, but I would definitely not look cute.
"Please?" I tried one more time. I would have to show her my scars if she didn't get me new clothes and I've reached my limit on disgusted faces for the day.
She sighed, "Fine." and left the room locking it behind her.
I sat on the bed relieved. I rolled over to see there was a clock on the bedside table. I quickly snatched it. Wanting to know for the first time in a year what the time was, it read 1:25 PM. I smiled as I read it over and over again. I knew knowing the time is a small thing but it's just another chunk of my freedom I have gotten back.
When the door knob began to turn I quickly put the clock back, acting like I got caught with my hand in the cookie jar. I sat up and turned the expression on my face blank, like it always is.
The same girl came back in. "Here, this is what I usually wear for combat." She smiled warmly. "I hope they fit. My name's Emily by the way, what's yours?"
"Thanks and my name's Dodge." I was quickly growing tired of telling people my name, but she seemed nice enough. I went to the walk in closet to change as she waited outside.
The clothes she gave me were all black, just like I wore when I escaped for those few precious hours. She even gave me combat boots.
When I was done changing I came back out. I handed Emily Charlie's jacket.
"I gotta say that is more your style." She said with a grin. "Now for food, come down to the pack kitchen with me and I'll fix you up something."
I noded and she led the way through the maze of a house. When we made it to the kitchen all the chatter I heard previously on our way here stopped at our entrance.
I noded my head to Charlie that was sitting at the table, he noded back in a. silent hello.
There was three more people at the table, two girls and another guy. They all stared at me as I stood there awkwardly. To say I wasn't a people person was an understatement.
