I was in the studio, headphones on, feeling the rhythm as I worked on a track I had been perfecting for weeks. The beat felt alive in my veins, the music filling me with a rare kind of peace. It was the one thing that kept me grounded lately. But then, the door swung open with such force that it almost rattled the walls.
Crayon stood there, panting heavily, his eyes wide with panic.
"Rema!" he gasped, his words tumbling out in a rush, "Fireboy has been calling you!"
I pulled off my headphones, already sensing that something was wrong. "For what?" I asked, the confusion making my voice sound sharp.
"Zara was involved in an accident!" Crayon's words hit me like a freight train. My heart skipped a beat, my thoughts grinding to a halt as I tried to process what he just said.
"She crashed into a trailer!" His words kept echoing in my mind, but I could hardly understand what was happening. The room felt like it was spinning. My Zara? My love? She was in an accident?
Before I could even ask another question, my body moved on its own. I was already out of the studio and speeding down the road, my mind clouded with thoughts of her. The drive to the hospital felt like the longest journey I had ever experienced. Each passing second dragged on, my breath quickening as I imagined the worst possible outcomes. What if she didn't make it? What if I had lost her forever? The mere thought made my chest tighten with a suffocating weight.
The closer I got to the hospital, the more frantic my mind became. I could barely focus on the road, my hands gripping the wheel as my thoughts raced.
When I finally arrived at Lagoon Hospital, I barely had the energy to park. I rushed through the entrance, hoping to catch any sign of her, to find some sort of reassurance.
Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Fireboy was pacing near the entrance, his face ashen, and I immediately saw Michael and Sandra by the waiting area. Michael's usually stoic face was twisted in concern, but his eyes flickered toward me as I approached, and for a moment, I felt like the ground beneath me was going to give way.
I rushed to them. "What happened?" My voice came out urgent, demanding answers, but there was a sense of panic I couldn't suppress.
Sandra broke down first, her tears flowing freely. "She didn't see the trailer coming, Rema," she sobbed. "She... she crashed into it head-on. We don't know how bad it is... She's in surgery right now."
Surgery.
The word was like a cold dagger to my heart. Surgery meant she was in critical condition, it meant she wasn't okay, and that realization hit me harder than anything I had felt before.
I could barely process the words coming out of Fireboy's mouth as he added, "She's in surgery... They're doing everything they can, but we don't know what's going to happen yet." His eyes were hollow with the weight of the situation, and he kept running his hand through his hair as if trying to stop himself from breaking down.
I barely heard him, my entire body frozen in place. All I could think about was Zara—the girl who had been my constant, my anchor. How had it come to this? How had everything gotten so twisted, so out of control?
I turned back toward the reception desk, ignoring the looks from the doctors and nurses as they moved swiftly through the halls. "Where is she?" I asked, my voice cracking despite my best efforts to stay composed.
The nurse at the desk gave me a sympathetic look, but it didn't help. "She's still in surgery," she said softly. "You can wait in the family lounge, but we won't have updates until the surgery is over."
