Chapter 12
I placed my head against the thick white door and listened hard.
He had the nerve to come to my home after what happened between us. His excuse was that he had to speak to Mark about something.
I heard the two men mumbling incoherently, before Marks voice became a little more audible. “No but I won’t be able to leave her behind.” I could picture him sitting on his office chair, facing him.
“Well, you don’t have to leave her behind. Of course she can come along.”
I knew he was trying to keep away from saying my name. I wondered if mentioning my name made his pulse race, or if his heart skipped a beat... I know mine did whenever I said his name aloud. That was why I refrained from it.
“Hmm.... I don’t know. I don’t think April will feel very comfortable, besides you’re her teacher.” Marks voice had become low now, but I wanted him to continue arguing with him. Oh Lord, the suspense was killing me. I wanted to know what they were talking about. Thankfully my prayer had been answered.
“It’s just a celebration party, Mark. Besides Charlie will be there. They go to college together.”
I froze on the spot and my eyes widened a little. After what I found out yesterday, I did not want to see Charlie. Nor did I want to see him. He had lied to me and made me look like a fool. Subconsciously, I clenched my fists and gritted my teeth till my gum hurt. The very thought of them being related infuriated me.
After crying my eyes out in the car park, I had returned to Nando’s to find Mark munching his way through dessert, which he had ordered because he had gotten bored of waiting. I hadn’t been able to concentrate on anything that was happening, and was thankful that Mr. Mason and Charlie had left before I had returned. But when we got back home, I told Mark that I was tired and went straight to bed. I hadn’t slept that night. My thoughts had kept going back to that time when Charlie spotted me and him in the office, talking about our past. I now understood why he was so sure Charlie wouldn’t go and tell on us; of course he would be able to talk his nephew out of it.
But what I couldn’t understand was why Charlie had been told the truth, yet his brothers knew far from it. It just didn’t make any sense.
“Ok, Matt. Thanks for the invitation, of course I’ll be there tonight.” I heard Mark’s voice, followed by a moment of chairs being scraped back. I inhaled a quick breath of air and raced upstairs, as silently as possible. I shut my bedroom door just in time to hear the office door opening.
“See you soon.” His deep voice entered my ears and automatically brining tears to my eyes. Don’t cry April, I thought to myself, tears are just worthless.
As soon as the front door slammed shut, Mark called my name.
I rolled my eyes and trudged downstairs, grumbling to myself when I stood in the hallway and looked up at him.
