Nathan stirred awake, his head throbbing. The rough texture of the chair he was tied to bit into his wrists and back. Every muscle in his body ached, and he struggled against the ropes restraining his body, but they wouldn't budge.

Across from him sat Emma, the right side of her lip showing off a nasty scar, and dry blood stained across her face. Kaylin was beside her, quiet but glaring daggers at the guards pacing nearby. She was the least hurt out of all of them, because, well, Amaan's orders.

Drake and Alessandra were further down, their faces tense, as if they were expecting to get tortured once again anytime soon. "We're never gonna get out of here, are we?" Drake whispered to Alessandra. "I hope we do," she replied back.

The group had been captured the night before, ambushed in their own base. Their captors—the Outkasts—were once familiar faces, old rivals from school, warped by the apocalypse into cruel, calculating survivors.

"Comfortable?" one of the guards sneered, a big kid with scars lining his face. He banged a metal pipe against the floor, the echo reverberating throughout the warehouse. "Don't bother trying to escape. We've made sure of that."

Nathan swallowed hard, his mouth dry. "Shut your bitchass up! You guys are pussies for doing this. Didn't even give us a chance to fight back." he rasped, his voice breaking.

The guard smirked. "Orders from the top. Amaan wants answers, and you guys have them. Until then, you stay right here."

The warehouse was suffocating, the air thick with rust and despair. Shadows loomed large on the cracked concrete walls, cast by flickering industrial lights barely clinging to life.

Chains rattled in the cold draft as though the building itself was alive and watching. The captives sat in a corner, their backs against the frigid wall, bound and bruised. It was a place where hope went to die — the perfect lair for The Outkasts.

Drake's hands trembled against the ropes holding his body, every muscle in his body screaming in protest. His mind was racing. If he didn't act soon, they wouldn't make it out alive.

Alessandra sat beside him, her face pale but determined. Her shield lay discarded across the room, just out of reach.

"I don't think anyone's coming," Alessandra whispered, her voice barely audible. Her dark eyes flickered with a mix of resignation and determination.

"If we're going to get out of here, it's now or never." Drake nodded, his throat dry. "I have a plan, but it's lowkey shifty." He shifted subtly, his fingers searching for the tracking device hidden in his sleeve.

The smooth, cold metal gave him a small flicker of hope. He pressed it. For a moment, there was only silence. Then the faint vibration in his sleeve confirmed the signal had been sent. Relief washed over him, but it was fleeting. Help wouldn't arrive in time.

"We'll buy them time," Drake said, his voice steadying. The warehouse doors groaned under their weight as a group of T.O.K. guards entered. Their leader, Amaan, barked orders to the others.

"They'll talk soon enough," he sneered. "Keep them alive, but not comfortable." Drake's jaw clenched as rage boiled inside him. He tugged at his bindings with renewed vigor, finally managing to slip one hand free.

Quietly, he reached for the sniper strapped to a nearby crate, the guards distracted by their leader's commands. Alessandra noticed and nodded, inching closer to her shield.

Minutes felt like hours as tension hung heavy in the air. Nathan tried to think of something—anything—any sort of plan to buy them time.

His mind raced, memories of his parents and siblings flashing before his eyes. "Stay strong," he told himself, though the words felt hollow. Across the room, Alessandra's resolve hardened. She strained against her bindings, her eyes fixed on her shield.

The moment an opportunity presented itself, she would act. But it wasn't Alessandra who moved first. One of the guards, a hispanic girl with a cruel grin, approached Emma. She looked like someone she's seen before.

Then it clicked. This was Haylee's ex-friend, Maya. She'd seen her in photos before. "The boss says we need leverage," she sneered, grabbing her arm roughly. "Get the fuck off me!" Emma snarled, thrashing in her chair.

Nathan and Kaylin erupted in protests, struggling against their restraints, but the guards were too strong. Drake watched, his jaw clenched, his heart pounding as the scene unfolded. "Wait for my signal," Drake whispered.

When one of the guards turned his back, Drake seized the opportunity. In one motion, he grabbed the gun and swung it around. The first shot rang out through the entire warehouse echoing against the empty walls.

A guard collapsed instantly, blood pooling beneath him. Then came a deafening crash. Alessandra had toppled her chair, shattering the tension in the room. With a grunt, she freed her arms.

As the remaining guards scrambled for cover, Alessandra lunged for her shield. Her fingers wrapped around the handle as she swung backwards, just as another guard swung a crowbar at her. She blocked it with a resounding clang, the impact reverberating through her arm.

Her shield was immediately redirected to the ropes restraining her as the weirdly sharp plastic cut through them like butter. She then rammed into the guard as his head brutally slammed into the concrete pillar behind him.

"Over here!" she shouted, drawing their attention away from Drake. The guards swarmed toward her, but Alessandra stood her ground, wielding her shield with unrelenting determination.

She bashed one in the chest, sending him sprawling, then turned to block a knife thrust aimed at her back.

Drake's breathing was labored, his vision blurring. He leaned against a stack of crates, his sniper rifle clutched tightly in his hands. Alessandra stepped back from the fight, positioning herself in front of him, her shield raised, her body battered but unyielding.
