Backstory: little Vassilis Ariti was born in Kavala, Greece. His mother was much younger than his father, so she flew to Macedonia and got an education.

Trigger warning. Discussion of religious trauma

His father was a strict, uncaring man. When his shady business deals went south, he fled the country to Lourdes, France. He took on the alias of Hugos, ironically named after the huguenots of France, and gave he and his son a French last name.

Val grew up in the Catholic church, his father using biblical punishments to teach him the ways of the Lord. He has scars down his back and chest from these teachings. He prayed every night to the Lady of the Lourdes, in hopes of finding mercy from his father.

Val escaped his father and found sanctuary when Hugos forced Val to do missionary work in the United States. He changed his legal name to Silis and adopted the American last name Smith to fit in.

Sexuality: he grew up with strong religious guilt so although he doesn't understand it, he leans both ways.
