Ethan's POV

I feel horrible.

I know that I hit a sore spot with mentioning Jess' parents. I know that I deserve that slap. I regret what I said as soon as the words left my mouth. I tried to apologize, but it was too late. I stood there, holding my cheek and staring after Jess as she storms off. Afterwards, her friend Anne came over and stomped on my foot. I deserved that too. Throughout the whole day I tried to talk to Jess, but she avoided me every time. I saw Anne and I tried to talk to her as she collects books from her locker, but all she said to me was:

"Talk to her yourself. You screwed up badly, jerk."

It's now morning. My alarm clock goes off, but I'm already awake. I barely slept, the guilt killing me. I get up and walk to my bathroom. There's bags under my eyes from lack of sleep and I look like crap. After brushing my teeth and taking a shower, I changed my clothes before heading down the stairs.

"Morning big bro! Man, you look like crap!" Maddie tells me through a mouthful of cereal.

"Thanks." I rolled my eyes and sat down at the table with Maddie. Katie goes to a nearby college, and is probably in her class now. I grab some Froot Loops and pour them into a bowl before getting some milk.

"Spill. What happened? Did Samantha cheat on you? I knew that she was a b----"

"NO! She didn't. It's just that.... I kind of mentioned a topic that I shouldn't have in front of Jess. And now she's so upset that she wouldn't even let me apologize."

"Oh crap. You always manage to mess up things, Ethan. But here's what you should do. Somehow you need to corner her and really apologize. But you need to do this in a special kind of way. Oooh! I have an idea!" Maddie jumps in her seat excitedly.

"Let's hear it."

Jess' POV

I don't want to go to school today. I dread seeing Ethan again. Yes, I know that I'm being a bit dramatic, and I know that I will have to talk to him again, but not now.

"C'mon, Jess! I know that you don't want to get up, but you have to! We have school today!" Anne jumps on my bed and tries to tear the sheets away from me.

"No."

"Please? I made breakfast and I'll buy you lunch?" Anne asks, hopeful.

Although that does seem tempting, I rather not face Ethan.

"No, I'll just call in to say that I'm sick."

"I made breakfast, I'll buy you lunch, and I'll take you shopping after school; my treat?" Anne tries again.

"Fine." I sit up with a yawn and stretch my arms. Anne hugs me before leaving the room to let me get ready. I sigh before laying out an outfit of a pair of jeans and a flannel shirt. I did my business in the bathroom and changed.

"Hurry up, Jess! School starts in half an hour!" Anne shouts.

I made my way out of my room and into the kitchen. Anne had made some chocolate pancakes. Yum, my favorite.

"Thank you, Anne." I sit down at the table where a plate of pancakes was. Anne nods. "Am I the best best friend in the word or what?"

I laugh. After eating, we get in Anne's car and drove off to school. Suddenly, I felt nervous. What if Ethan has spread the word to the whole school and now I'm the laughing stock of the whole school? No, he wouldn't do that.... would he?

"It's going to be fine, Jess. Sure, the kids in the cafeteria might have heard it, but they're not going to laugh at you. Some will be in awe. I mean, you did give him a good slap. Some might hate you,but they'll get over it." Anne tries to reassure me, but that makes a little more worried. Before I can reply, we arrive at school. I groan.

"Do I have to?" I ask, looking at Anne with my best puppy eyes.

Anne covers her eyes. "Yes, you do."

"Fine, let's get this over with." I sigh and get out of the car.
