I woke up to the sound of slamming doors. I sighed and pulled the covers away. I sat on the edge of the bed, with my head resting in my hands. My door creaked and I looked up, seeing my little sister in the door almost broke my heart. I pat the spot next to me and she shut the door, quietly making her way over. She sat down and I pulled her close rubbing her back. I looked at the the clock, it read '5:19'.
"Go to sleep," I mumbled, "You have an hour before you need to get ready." I moved her over to lay on the bed and she hugged the blanket.
"What are you gonna do," she said yawning, "you need sleep too."
"I also need a shower," she laughed a little and closed her eyes.
"Do you have a shift," She asked only half awake.
"Not today." She hummed and nodded her head slightly. She was already asleep. I smiled slightly and kissed her forehead. I grabbed a pair of boxers and a towel and headed for the shower.
Ariel was only four years old and she had to live in a house that was full of fighting. In a couple of months I'll turn eighteen and I'll be able to fight for custody. My dad doesn't like Ariel, he believes she is the reason for his problems. After Ariel was born he had to pick up work so he could afford having her, then my mom started an affair. She would say she had job interviews and leave for hours. Finally my dad called one of her 'interviewers' and they weren't even looking for employers. Even after all that he won't leave her, I don't know why. So now I'm taking it into my own hands to get Ariel out of here.
I finish up my shower and dry off slipping on my boxers. Ariel is still asleep so I decide to work on some paper work. I have to start now because there's always a shitload. I was halfway through one paper when Ariel woke up.
"You awake Buttercup?" I ask. She groans and stretches her arms above her head.
"Yeah Jojo," she says. Now it's my turn to groan.
"Why do you call me that?"
"It's Jojo or Professor." I groaned again and she giggled .
"Got get dressed buttercup, and we'll go to the diner and drop you off with May." She hopped out of the bed and headed towards the door.
"Okay, is Isabelle going to pick me up again?" she asked.
"I don't know, I'll call May and let her know so she can tell you. Okay?"
"Okay," she says nodding her head.
"Okay go get dressed." she nods and leaves my room. I sigh getting up from my desk and put on clothes. It's hard playing baseball and trying to take care of Ariel, but thanks to May, the diner's owner, it's a lot easier. Whenever I get a late shift or have a party she'll let Ariel stay at the diner or her daughter Isabelle will take her. My door creaks open and Ariel comes back in.
"Jojo, I'm ready," she says. I grab my school bag and we head downstairs. All the lights are off so our parents must be in their rooms. I grabbed Ariel's car seat and had her outside the door.
"Xavier," my father slurred. Shit, he's drunk.
"Father," I said. "Stay outside," I whispered to Ariel. I shut the door and turned around. His eyes were bloodshot and he was leaning against the wall.
"I have to go I'll see you later," I said, quickly I stepped outside of the house and shut the door. I heard a crash from the other side but decided to ignore it.
"Is he mad at me?" Ariel asked. I looked down at her, her eyes were full of tears. I got down on one knee so I was eye level with her.
"Of course not Buttercup," I said holding her arms. She sniffled so I hugged her tight. "He's not mad at you, he's mad at me." She let out a little sob.
