Viviene sat cross-legged on the living room floor, her jeans dusted with crumbs from the kids' snack time earlier. A sea of colorful blocks and scattered toy cars surrounding her like the remnants of a tiny, chaotic hurricane. Sophie, her ten-year-old daughter, was sitting cross-legged on the couch nearby, her legs tucked under her as she flipped a page in her book. Meanwhile, the twins, Max and Mia, were enthusiastically stacking blocks, their giggles filling the air each time their precarious towers came crashing down. The twins were in their own world, their high-pitched giggles blending with the soft hum of the dishwasher in the kitchen. The late afternoon sunlight poured through the window, casting a warm, golden glow over the room. It should have felt serene, but a familiar unease coiled in Viviene's chest.

It was a Sunday afternoon—usually her favorite day of the week, when the weight of work and responsibilities lifted just enough for her to enjoy moments like these with her kids. But today, her mind was elsewhere.

"Mommy," Max said, dragging out the word as he tugged on her sleeve, "look at this! It's the tallest tower ever!"

Viviene blinked, forcing herself to focus on him. "Wow, Max! That's incredible. You're an architect in the making!"

Max grinned, his face lighting up with pride, but Viviene's praise was fleeting. Her mind quickly wandered back to her conversation with Ava and Daniel at the café the day before. Their words played on a loop in her head, tugging at her like an unfinished thread.

Was she losing herself in her relationship with Regina?

No. Of course not, she told herself for the hundredth time. Relationships took effort, didn't they? Compromise? Adjustments? Surely that didn't mean she was losing who she was.

Mia let out an excited squeal as she balanced another block atop their teetering tower. "Mommy, look! It's taller than Max now!"

Max's face scrunched with mock offense. "No way! I'm the tallest, not some dumb tower!"

"Mommy said it was the tallest ever!" Mia taunted, sticking out her tongue.

"Did not!" Max lunged forward to knock over the blocks.

"Hey!" Mia cried, her face scrunching as if on the verge of tears.

Viviene snapped back to the present, holding her hands up to stop the incoming sibling showdown. "Okay, okay, truce! No knocking over anyone's tower unless it's an earthquake game, got it?"

Max pouted but sat back down, while Mia clutched her blocks protectively. Viviene sighed, feeling the usual exhaustion of mediating their endless disputes. It was manageable, though—usually even endearing. But today, her patience was thin, frayed by Regina's insistent texts and the doubts they stirred in her.

"Mom?" Sophie's voice cut through her thoughts. "You've been staring at the wall for like... forever. Are you okay?"

Viviene startled, glancing at Sophie's inquisitive eyes peering over the top of her book. She forced a smile. "I'm fine, sweetheart. Just thinking about work."

Sophie raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying it, but said nothing.

She brushed her hair out of her face and forced a smile. "Why don't we work together to build the biggest tower ever? Team effort?"

The twins exchanged skeptical glances but nodded. The idea of collaboration quickly turned their squabble into a new challenge, and Viviene tried to focus on their laughter as they rebuilt.

Out of the corner of her eye, she caught Sophie lowering her book again to stare at her. "Mom," Sophie said, her voice cutting through the twins' chatter. "What's really wrong?"
