I shove my books into my locker with such force it shudders. In the mirror badly glued to the inside of my locker door I catch the reflection of a girl, with eyes that held pain so deeply it's almost unbearable to look at. I know it's going to be another long school year and I'll be constantly having to look over my shoulder in watch of Clarissa. Those words she whispered so clearly and with such hatred into my ear on the last day of the school year back in May still linger with me:
You'd better watch your step Evelyn, trouble awaits you. If you thought this year was bad, you ain't seen nothing yet.
And everytime I hear those words, it sends shivers up my spine. Last year was more horrific than the last. On the first day I moved here to Santa Cruz High from Orlando in Florida, just over two years ago, Clarissa had made it her job to make sure every school day was a living nightmare. Though I have never seemed to understand why she holds such hatred and fury against me, and it always leaves me wondering what I ever did to her? I've barely said a word to her since I moved here and am too frightened for my own damn good to even confront the girl.
I pull out my books for history and english and shut my eyes as I close my locker door. "Well look who we've got here," a voice cooes. My back stiffens. Oh no, please don't let it be Clarissa. Anyone but Clarissa; I need to avoid her for at least the first day. I turn around and my eyes open landing on the hands firmly planted on her hips. As soon as I met her eyes the fiery glint disappears and the milky warmness returns. She bursts into hysterics of laughter and I roll my eyes. "Aria that's not funny," I whine leaning back onto the locker. Hooking her arm around my waist we begin walking towards the cafeteria.
"Evelyn you know I don't mean it," she sighs, "you've got to stop letting her get to you like that. It's just not fair."
"Nothing in life's fair," I mumble under my breath as we settle at our usual table in the right corner; the table furthest from Clarissa's. Her along with her fellow cheerleaders sit with the jocks in the table right in the middle of the cafeteria and thankgod I don't have to pass it to get to our usual table. Clarissa and the rest of the cheerleaders make misery of my life, but so far nothing has yet to come today and I fear the worst is still to come.
"Ally snap out of it," Aria snaps clicking her fingers in front of Ally's face. Ally's apricot blonde hair cascades down her shoulders in loose waves shrouding her fair complexioned neckline. The look in her bulging burnt honey eyes has me slightly concerned (sometimes Ally could be a tad bit dramatic). Aria sitting next to me is looking over her shoulder as she snorts her response, "well look who's returned..."
