We both pull our hands back and try to evade catching each other's eyes. The silence between us sends goose bumps down my back, so I opt to leave. I nod him curtly and only make it halfway around the corner before I hear his voice trailing behind, "wait, just one more thing." I squint my eyes shut and take a deep breath in. I figured it's about time he'd want to talk to me about this. Reluctantly I turn to face Hayden, and we step back into the cover of the overgrowth beside the building. School bell hasn't rung yet, but I'm betting it'll go soon.
"What is it?" I sigh, feeling resigned already.
"How did you know about it?"
"About what?" I ask, still feeling hesitant to speak about it.
"Come on, Evelyn, you know what I'm talking about." Folding his arms, he raises an eyebrow at me.
"Ok fine. I-I-" I stop mid-sentence. What are you going to tell him Evelyn? What, that you found it in his school records; ones which I'm sure are highly confidential? Yeah I'm sure that's going to go down well.
"You?" he urges me on, leaning forward as he speaks with such clarity.
"I um remember seeing it in a newspaper ages ago," I lie, biting down on my tongue so hard, it begins to bleed and the metallic tang of blood seeps into my mouth.
"You slapped me right then and there just because you so happened to remember seeing an article on the crash ages ago?" he asks, a fire burning intensity setting in his look.
"Mhm," I murmur, rising up and down on my toes in a nervous habit.
"Lying is a bad habit Evelyn," Hayden states, picking up his bag as he stalks off ending our conversation right there.
"That's something I agree on with you there Hayden," I mumble, watching him drift off into the crowds of loud school kids determined to make the last of their remaining minutes before the bell. Another message comes through my phone with a beep that makes me squeak in surprise. Reluctantly, I slide open my phone and unlock it with my code. My message is from an unknown number. That's...odd. On opening the text, a cold shiver runs down my spine, freaked at the message:
you are the worst liar.
Could it be Hayden? I mean he did just say lying was a bad habit to have. There's every reason to believe he sent that text. So why can't I believe it? Maybe it's the feeling of somebody constantly watching me, and the sudden urges just to check in case someone is there. Yet when I glance over my shoulder I know there's no one there. Shrugging it off I take off into the crowds, trying to ignore the constant mockery. The school bell rings and relief floods through me for I don't think I can handle this anymore. At least in a classroom or corridor you don't have to face the whole school. Man I don't know how Clarissa managed to get the whole school on board with mocking me, with a few exceptions. There are some that just completely ignore me, and others who just cower away afraid of anything connected to Clarissa. But really she has the whole school wrapped around her finger, even the teachers. I can't wait for the day when she comes crumbling down. I suppose that sounds really mean, but truthfully, after all she's put me through am I not allowed to think selfishly at one point? Over the crowds I can't seem to spot Aria or Ally, but I doubt they're in the mood to talk to me anyway. They didn't seem to want to earlier so I doubt they're going to want to now.
By the time I settle into my seat for first period English I already feel exhausted. Sleep cannot always help fix some things. I open my books, pull out a pen and get ready for when Mr Johnson walks to begin the lesson. My eyes seem to find themselves constantly landing on Clarissa and her minions. They've all crowded around one table, having a gossip session. Then one of them pulls out their phones and it looks like world war three is about to begin. Clarissa's eyes almost bug out of her head. Her cheeks are flared a deep, scarlet red. She flicks her brown hair over her shoulder, and glares right at me. Eyes narrowed and lips pursed. She's mad. Very, very mad. My eyes catch the flicker of a photo on one of her minions phones. Well I wonder whom that photo could be of. Yeah I can see why she'd be really mad about that, there's not a girl or maybe guy in the school who wouldn't want to get with Hayden. But really I'm surprised she hadn't seen the photo already. Being her and all it's just a little weird...
