3 months later. And Lisa wasn't doing well. I tried to help, really I did but there is only so much you can do.
Every day she would come into school with new cuts on her wrists and dark circles under her eyes. She became isolated and wouldn't speak much. But I stayed with her, always by her side. Even when she tried to push me away.
On good days, I would be able to spend some time with her and laugh, just like the old days. She was the only person who could ever make me laugh with her dumb jokes and silly faces. But it only lasted for a few days, then she would slip back into her own little world.
It killed me to see her like this. I tried to keep her strong and happy but I couldn't be with her 24/7.
"You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. You can't help me." She said one day at school. She had tears in her eyes. I knew what she was doing. Lisa was pushing me away because she didn't want me to get hurt. But it was too late, I wasn't going to leave her. Not now, not ever.
I hugged her as tight as I could. "No matter what, I'll always be here for you. Even if you don't want me here. I promise, I'll always be here for you little one."
Lisa buried her head into my shirt and cried. She never cried, no matter what she refused to cry in front of people, even me. She broke her arm in primary school and her eyes didn't even water.
After about 10 minutes she lifted her head up, swallowed her pride and said "Thank you Charlie." Before walking away, leaving me sitting in the crowded cafeteria in our school.
The bell rang and I put away my lunch tray and shuffled to class.
I knew there was only so much I could do to help her, but I wasn't just going to disappear and leave her alone. I decided that day, that I wouldn't let her push me away. If the tables were turned she wouldn't leave me.
