"'You can trust me,' R.V. said, watching her hand. 'I'm a man of my-'" my mom closed the book in her lap and stood up. I stared at her confused.
"Is that it?" I questioned as she put the book back in its place on the shelf.
"Yes, that's how the book ends." She answered simply. My mom was a woman of simplicity. Everything about her was soft and simple, from her soft curls pulled neatly into a bun, to her smooth black skin that had no imperfections. Her eyes were a honey brown that reminded me of the sun. I looked nothing like her. My hair was wild, unkempt and fell just below my shoulders. My eyes were hazel, not the beautiful kind described in books but the odd kind that were green with brown patches. My skin was a soft brown. While her features made her look soft and angelic mine made me look impish.
"But they were in the middle of their sentence. Why would he end it like that?" I asked.
"Because the ending wasn't important, it's the event that lead up to it that mattered, plus it made the author different from everyone. He stuck out." She kneeled next to me with a smile.
"That's boring." I argued, causing her to laugh.
"That's literature." She walked closer and brushed her hand across the top of my head then placed a soft kiss on my forehead.
"Will I ever be as smart as you mom?" She leaned back and held my hand with both of hers.
"You are not only going to be smart as me but you'll be smarter, and you're going to be a great leader one day." She turned back around getting ready to leave then froze. He was at the door, the governor of the town we sadly inhabit.
"What did I tell you about wasting your time reading to her?" He growled. Philip Blake had taken an interest in my mom almost two years ago when I was around eleven. Before that he had been the man who had convinced everyone to kill Major Gene Gavin. It took a year before our group had fully trusted him to lead us. My mom, who had been against letting Phillip lead, had lost the fight in trying to convince the others that he wasn't one of the good guys. I didn't understand why she had gotten close to him until she had come in to read to me one night with a black eye and a tear stained face. She was afraid of him, but she needed to keep me safe. Stepping closer to him, my mom sighed."I'm not wasting my time and don't tell me what to do with my dau-", abruptly he grabbed her shirt and flung her towards the bookcase. Books toppled over onto her as Philip rushed towards me. He yanked me up by the back of my shirt then began to drag me towards the door.
"Don't talk back to me Lucille!" He barked as he dragged me around the house. I fought to get away but failed as my mom tried catching up to us. He dragged me into the living room then opened the basement door. He threw me down the stairs causing my body to bruise all over. Slamming the door shut, Philip immediately started to scream at my mom. The darkness surrounded me as I listened with tears streaming down my face. After a while I closed my eyes and fell asleep on the cold cement floor.

The next couple of weeks were the same. Me sitting in the basement alone in the cold. I hadn't seen my mom at all. This was how he felt powerful, letting people sit under his control afraid. I was propped against the wall when I heard running in the house. The basement door quickly opened. I looked up at it alarmed. My mom bolted down the stairs with a small backpack in her hands. She ran over to me with tears in her eyes and a bruised face.
"Breanna!" She hugged me and held my hand.
"Mom, I thought you were dead!" Tears brimmed my eyes in relief."I don't have much time, it's not safe here anymore, but I have a note that will explain everything. It's in this bag along with some food and other supplies you'll need. I put it in a small bag so it would be easier to run." I scrunched my brow in confusion.
"Where are we running?" Her face twisted with guilt.
"I'm not going with you." She pronounced quietly.
"What?" A smile formed on my face at the ridiculous notion.
"This is your chance to go find another group, and be safe, and happy." Her voice was weak as she spoke. I shook my head as tears started to pour out of my eyes.
"No mom. I don't want to be happy without you." My voice came out as a desperate plea. I felt a hole form in my stomach and sweat form on my brow.
"Be happy for me. Here's a gun." I paused as she placed the gun into my hand.
"I don't know how to use a gun." I mumbled frantically."Here." She grabbed my hand and showed me.
"Press, don't pull. Instead of pulling the trigger, press the trigger straight to the rear. Take the slack out of the trigger. Squeeze the trigger to the point you start feeling resistance. Here's a knife and a holster." She handed me the knife and holster then a black hoodie, black jeans, and black sneakers. After I put on the clothes I was about to put the gun in my holster when she grabbed my hand firmly. My eyes shot up to meet hers and I noticed her chestnut brown eyes had become a shade darker. "Always have your gun ready." My breath came out shakily before I closed my mouth and nodded. Immediately, she wrapped her arms around me. The gesture had made me realize that this was real and that this was probably the last time I would see my mom. The thought hit me like a hammer, causing tears to run down my cheeks. Almost four years together in the apocalypse and this was it. I was losing my mother and she wasn't even dead. She pulled away now fully in tears.
"I know you know about the monsters outside of the town but don't underestimate them. Never let your guard down. Don't get bit or scratched. If you need to hide don't make any noise. Kill one and cover yourself in its blood and guts, it'll blend you in." I shook my head as a tear streamed down my face followed by another, and another."Mom I can't do this alone!" I yelled at her for the first time causing her to soften up.
"Yes sweetie you can, it's time to be strong. Don't trust anyone until you know for sure. I wish I can tell you that everything's going to be okay but I can't. It's up to you how strong you are." She held out the bag of supplies wearily. I hesitated but grabbed it."Don't shoot unless you absolutely need too, the corpses are attracted to noise." I nodded and pulled the backpack on. She kissed my forehead softly then went over to the small basement window. She stepped on a wooden chair then broke the window with her elbow. She stepped back down. I walked over then hugged her one last time.
"I love you mom." My voice cracked.
"I love you too Breanna." I heard the door upstairs slam followed by running.
"Go now!" She commanded. I quickly went through the window as the governor's yelling sounded through the house like an alarm. I sprinted until I was at the wall. I quickly climbed over, dodging bullets that hit the wall the second I hit the ground. I scanned around noticing some corpses coming near me. I panicked and began running.

* Update
I started this book back around season four so I was only about fourteen so please correct any mistakes. (5/25/18)Another update! Happy Holidays I have decided to fully update the book to fix as many spelling errors I can as well as add in more scenes because I feel much better having a work published if I know I've put my best effort towards it. There have been no major changes just a lot more detail and a lot less plotholes! I didn't make that many dramatic changes to the Twd storyline except for the fact that Lucille doesn't die from cancer, and that Negan and Lucille do have a child, and also that Carl doesn't get as close to Enid as he does on the show. (12/22/18)
Final update! Since a few of y'all said you'd like me to post the revised chapters here ya go!Here is the first revised chapter, to know if a chapter is revised see the title, if it doesn't have a chapter name and just has the number it is not revised! Hope y'all enjoy! (2/9/19)
