Dear Reader,
In case it wasn't already clear from the title, this is an Introduction.
It's basically that thing at the front of some novels where the author says something mildly interesting about their novel and sometimes relatively intriguing about their thought process in the creation of their novel. That 'chapter' that about ninety percent of readers skip. So you can skip this if you want.
Everything to do with my world in this introduction will be made apparent within my story, so it isn't necessary to read. But if you, like me, enjoy having some clear information and insight into the story's creation all in one place, if you're a seeker wishing to have the world at your feet and therefore wish to stay, then let me just say: Welcome to the world of Fire and Ice!
At first you may be sceptical, unable to imagine how a world such as this could be any different from what you've read before, but bear with me. This world is different.
This world is separated into two countries or people groups that make up the entirety of the world: Fire and Ice. Fire floats in the sky on high mountains, volcanoes and flat expanses whilst Ice is located in the conjoining caves below the Surface. (More on them in a moment.) Between the two is the Surface, a beautiful land of trees, mountains, rivers, deserts and many varieties of animals. However, although filled with minerals, clean water and other resources, the Surface is completely uninhabitable for humans.
This concept was one I played with for a while as I began creating this world. The idea that each world would send gatherers and collectors to a 'Surface' to collect resources in order to live, struck me as a sort of 'defect' to their way of life and a contradiction to their harsh world.
The premise of it all is that, although humans could visit the surface, they could never live there as the greater span of time spent on the surface, the more a disease would infect their body and eventually kill them. Therefore, it became impossible to live there, but plausible to survive for small amounts of time.
I've placed a few pictures to give an idea of the luscious Surface below:
