The morning when she was going to visit doctor Matgeno she dressed almost shabbily, in loose track pants and a wide t-shirt. If he was going to move about her bones she had to be in comfortable clothing, she thought.
The practice was in a modest building in a calm neighborhood. Tania was looking forward to having her back fixed somehow, but she wasn't hoping for much. These doctor promises were never kept anyway.
When she stepped into the neat reception the first thing that caught her eye was the mousy secretary. This was the soft-juicy lady voice turned bitchy on the phone? She looked more like an aspiring nun at a dusty convent. Also she looked at Tania with a vague air of annoyance and irritation.
"You're Mrs Brewer I presume?" "You presume right. Good morning." Limits and bases were settled. Mellowed, the mouse led Tania to a waiting room and left her there. The room was white and clear, with only a few health magazines on offer.
After a few minutes Tania saw a woman of about forty leave through the corridor. The woman's eyes were glowing, she was walking slowly and groggily. Abstractly she took three next appointments with the mouse, who looked at her disapprovingly. Tania wondered.
Then she was finally called in by the mouse. The chiropractor's room was empty, and she sat in a chair by an almost empty desk. Waiting, again. She was becoming impatient; after all she wanted to do some shopping before lunch and hadn't been thinking of spending her entire morning in this drab place. Dr Matgeno must be a sleepy slow old man, probably worse than Dr Carruthers...
And then the door opened. Dr Matgeno entered. Tania's jaw dropped. She hoped only mentally. Her insides went soft. Her perineum tightened suddenly, and a shiver ran down her back.
Dr Matgeno was a Nordic god made flesh. He had deep cold grey eyes, dark blond short hair, a prominent jaw. About 40. He was moderately tall and sinewy, like a panther mixed with a muscular serpent. He looked her deep in the eyes from high up before sitting down, and then his whole face glowed into a wide, melting grin. The most lovely, heart-warming wolfish grin Tania ever saw.
"Good morning Mrs Brewer, how are you today?" Tania found it hard to say something, her tongue was heavy. She could just stare and feel ashamed. "Oh hum, fine thank you.." Dr Matgeno typed something into his computer and stared briefly at the screen. "So you have some trouble with your... back?" He frowned a bit and gazed into the emptiness beside Tania. "Do you like music? I heard this amazing song and can't get it out of my head. Let me play it for you and see if it has the same effect." Tania was flabbergasted. She had expected the usual doctor chat and some bone movement. She was going to get maybe more than what she had expected. Tania wasn't used to that.
Dr Matgeno clicked on his computer and turned up the volume. Tania heard a wild guitar and organ pounding a melody that made her excited but also at the same time tender. It was magnificent. "It's a band called Electrelane. I heard it first in a movie and couldn't forget it. It looks like you like it too, eh?" He grinned again, and Tania melted away. That grin. "Yes", she was able to stammer back. "Sorry, I'm not a good doctor. You'll notice that many times... Anyway." He pressed a button and the glittering music stopped, much to Tania's sadness. "Ok so I see you have back pain, after a prolonged period of huge stress. Tell me more." Tania struggled and then opened her mouth. "Yes, hum, I had a stupid job at an awful place and it went on for two years and I just couldn't breathe anymore, and it hurts and..." She felt tears burning in her eyes and wrestled them down as best she could. Dr Matgeno just looked deep into her eyes, quiet, focused. He didn't interrupt her nor did he ask more. She could just look back and then down after three or four very long seconds. Ashamed again somehow, like a little girl. "I will look at your back. Could you please take off your shirt? Behind that screen there. You can leave on your underwear." When he said underwear Tania thought her groin would explode. She had to control herself, hack, what was she a bitch in heat? She got up and stood behind the screen. She could hear him typing something into the computer. What would it be? "Hysterical middle-aged shabby woman" probably. Suddenly she despaired – why in hell had she put on this greyish sports bra today? Was she out of her mind? She couldn't face Dr Matgeno in this... Again, get a grip girl! This is not a sex date, he's a doctor, just a chiropractor. But she couldn't convince herself. Eventually she had to step out.
