(Wasnt me this time i got locked out my accs, i still cant get on to AO3 to update there, sorry 😭)
You turned back just in time to catch Sebastian watching you, a subtly raised eyebrow giving away his amusement. He had witness the entire exchange from the sidelines, a lion observing his prey. A vulture scavenging is a much better analogy for Sebastian. With a slight tilt of your head, you met his gaze and saw the mix of possessiveness and protective irritation swirling in his dark eyes.
'You seem quite taken with your new friend,' he thought, his voice low and teasing in your head, yet you could feel something laced with an undercurrent of something more serious. He still had no idea you could hear him.
'He cannot be jealous,' you thought.
Grabbing another glass, you found a corner in the room for reprieve. You were being passed around like a lucky sixpence being branded as the new girl. You were hot and sweaty and tired of running your mouth for useless small talk. All the fake smiling mixing with the alcohol unsettled your nerves. Melinda on her third dance of the night with Sebastian was not helping either. As another song ended she finally remembered you, making her way into the corner where you settled, grinning, "How're you holding up sugar?"
"Our auction will begin shortly," Sister Agnes said aloud to the guests before you could answer. You were glad, you thought about answering her bitterly, which would've ruined your carefully structured image. The champagne was so weak it would wreck your pride to chalk it up to being drunk. And drunks don't lie. The ballroom became alive with chatter as the men kissed their partners hand goodbye and some began to line up, fretting with their hair and jackets for lint that didn't exist.
"Auction?"
"Yeah, she didn't tell you?" Melinda raised her eyebrow, "We have an auction every week for charity. We trade in hours of work for a night with a gentleman. They cash out if they agree. You can only bid if you don't have a key... which you have," she gestured to the key strung on your wrist.
"What do you do with the person?"
"What do you think," she winked. "Whatever they like. It's consensual, that's why the women bid. And if the gentleman doesn't want to give up their key they don't have to. Win win if you ask me."
"I'm gunning for that one," she gestured to your husband who was waiting in line behind the other gentleman up for auction. "I hope he doesn't turn me down, he was flirty but he didn't have that same look in his eye like when he danced with you," she pouted.
"Great," you said with as little sardonicism you could muster. "What's the money for?"
"What do you mean?"
"They must be raising money for something. Else what is this all for?"
"Oh- Hadn't thought of that. Probably use it to help pay for everything since the rates here are quite cheap for a luxurious hotel. Our salary is also quite nice," you saw the casualness in her brush off of your question. She was telling the truth to her knowledge.
There was no denying that, however. Starting salary was way more than what you earned at the manor. Nudging you out of your thoughts she subtly pointed to the same cold charming man from before. The shiver that struck you nearly made you break the glass in your hand. "See him?"
You nodded, sipping the last of your drink putting the glass down with a shaky hand.
"I confronted him about staring at you and in the middle of telling him off, he said if he didn't give his key away he would've given it to me," she beamed. After muttering about wanting to rip his mask off, she grabbed your empty glass, gave you a new one, and walked to the gaggle of your coworkers. The same man raised his glass to you as he caught you staring at him from the corner of your eye. Thankfully Henrietta, one of your coworkers approached him stealing his attention giving your nervous system a break. Enid gave Melinda a paddle with a number on it and the room died down to a whisper as Sister Agnes took the podium.
