Prologue

Carmilla

It took me a moment to realize that the scream was my own, the pain jolting itself through my body, like a quick bolt of electricity that left my hands shaking. I felt hot blood start to drip down my side, but I didn't glance down. Not because I was afraid to, but because my eyes were focused on the vampire in front of me, watching him as I anticipated his next move.

"Too slow, kitten." he hissed, mocking me, as a wicked smile crossed his features, making his dark eyes light up. I was going to make him regret that.

My opponent started to circle me as I clutched my bleeding side with my hand, the blood oozing through my fingers, my stake ready in the other. He stalked around me, the way a predator stalks it's prey when it's about to attack. He was watching me, trying to find a weak point in my defence.

But I wouldn't let him. I was no prey, and this time I wouldn't miss with my attack.

My fingers clenched tightly around the wooden stake in my hand, my eyes never leaving his as I stood my ground, releasing a terrifying snarl from the back of my throat. Even with my injury, I was older than him, which meant I was also stronger and more powerful. We both knew that I had the upper hand here, but unlike my enemy, I was the only one who knew he was going to die.

I started to mimic his movements, my weapon in hand as we both hissed at each other, but I didn't attack. I was waiting for him to move, wanting him to lunge first so that I could finish him off before he could land another blow.

My eyes narrowed and a sly smile spread across my face when the enemy vampire finally lunged at me at top speed, leaving his chest area wide open. I didn't hesitate and sprang forward, meeting his foolish attack with a stake to the heart, and easily jabbing it between his ribs, as smoothly as cutting through butter.

"Who's the slow one now, kitten?" I snarled, watching with satisfaction as the light left his eyes and his body slumped against my own.

Kicking his form off of me, I pulled the stake out of his chest with violent force as he hit the ground. It made a grotesque sucking noise that made my nose curl, and a string of blood followed as I jerked the weapon away. The pain of the motion made me look down at my side, remembering now that I was still injured. I let out a gasp of shock, though not for the reason you think.

"Oh you son of a bitch," I grumbled, casting an angry glance down at the dead vampire, "You ripped my favourite shirt! You're lucky you're dead or I would have done much worse than just a stake to the heart!"

I scoffed and started to walk away, channeling my anger about torn and bloodstained shirt just in case I got attacked again. I needed to go deeper into the cave and make sure there weren't anymore shirt ruining fuck-ups in the nest.

By the looks of it the vampires had been here for a while, which made them an easy target to track down. Their mistake had cost them their lives. Now don't get me wrong, my Mother's lackeys had never really been that smart to begin with, but this had been a stupid move even for them. I never expected they'd be this careless.

I'd been tracking down the vampires who'd fled Silas after I killed the Dean for a while now, which hadn't been easy. Call it my distraction, which I guess in a way it is, but it was a better choice than staying in the godforsaken University any longer.
