"So," Professor Danforth started as the end of class drew near, "I bet you're all dying to know who is going on the trip to Alaska."
Literally everyone fell silent. You would be able to hear a pin drop. No one moved or made a single sound. Everyone's focus was on Mr. Danforth, and all anybody wanted was to hear their name called within the next minute or two.
"Great, I have your attention. Now, the students that I call are to meet me up here after class so we can discuss just a few things. Also, I know those of you who have the privilege of going on this trip will be excited, but I do not want any cheering, clapping, or celebrating of any sort. There are many students in this classroom who will not get to go on this trip, and you do not need to rub it in their faces like little 5 year olds."
Some kids snickered, others just rolled their eyes. But we all knew Mr. Danforth was not joking around with us, and he would not tolerate a single peep from any of us.
"Now, without further ado, here are the fifteen students: Ben Arneson, Dani Freeman, Rose Gorman, Trevor Hinz, Megan Jenkins, Ross Lynch, Harry Milne, Aspen Othrough..."
And that was when I stopped listening.
I did it.
I was going on the trip.
As soon as class ended, everyone filed out of the room except for me and 14 other students. We all quickly made our way to the front where Mr. Othrough was standing with a huge grin on his face.
"Congratulations everyone!" He exclaimed once we all gathered around him. "I'm so incredibly excited for this trip. I was you all to know that you are all so deserving of this trip. I cannot wait to get to experience this with you!"
We were all grinning from ear to ear. None of us could help it. We were all just as excited as Professor Danforth to go on this trip.
"Now, this might sound a bit childish and lame, but I would like you all to get to know each other a bit before we go on the trip. Learn each other's names, learn their interests, learn about each other. It'll make for a better trip. Sound like a plan?" Mr. Danforth asked. We all nodded and he smiled, clapping his hands together once. "Fantastic. You're all dismissed."
I took a quick glance at each person so that I could recognize them when I saw them next. I didn't really plan on talking to anyone that day, but the next thing I new, I felt someone tapping on my shoulder.
I turned around to see a grinning ginger standing in front of me.
"Hi!" She greeted, sticking out her hand for me to shake. "I'm Megan, and you are?"
"Aspen," I smiled, shaking her hand.
"Wait, are you roommates with Nina?" She asked suddenly.
"In fact, I am! How do you know Nina?" I questioned.
"We met at the freshmen welcome party, and we've been talking ever since. She actually talks about you quite a bit," Megan laughed.
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah. She really seems to like you."
"Well that's good because I enjoy her company, too," I chuckled.
"Well, I'm gonna go make the rounds with everyone else. It was nice meeting you, and hopefully we can hang out sometime before the trip, yeah?" Megan asked.
"Most definitely. See you around!" I smiled. I looked around and saw that everyone else was talking to someone else, and I didn't want to be rude and cut into their conversation, so I decided to head out.
I slipped the other strap of my backpack over my shoulder and started walking towards the door when I bumped into a body.
"Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry," I stated, looking up at the person I ran in to.
"We just keep bumping into each other, don't we?" Ross chuckled. My cheeks instantly became rosy, heat nearly radiating off of them. He then stuck his hand out in greeting. "I'm Ross."
"Aspen," I stated quietly, shaking his hand with a quaking hand of my own.
"Pretty name for a pretty girl," he flirted shamelessly. This was a new side of Ross I had never seen. At the party, he was in the corner the whole time, not speaking to anyone. On the first day of class, he was extremely shy and barely said a word. Even when we bumped into each other the first time, he wasn't exactly forward or putting himself out there. This was something different.
"T-thanks," I stuttered, then mentally cursed myself for being so shy and timid around him.
"Excited for the trip?" He asked.
"More than anything in the world," I replied, grinning at the thought.
"You seem to be pretty passionate about nature and photography," Ross said.
"How would you know?" I asked, a little taken aback and creeped out.
"Well for one, you're going on this trip. And don't think I forgot that little speech you made on the first day of class."
My eyes widened and my cheeks lit on fire. How the hell did he remember that?
"Oh, yeah, uh, this is pretty much my life. I can't imagine doing anything else," I shrugged, looking down at my shoes, embarrassed and trying not to make a big deal about it. I grabbed my water from my backpack, thinking it might cool me down and keep me from saying anything else idiotic.
"I like girls who know what they want and aren't afraid to tell the world. I like you, Aspen. You seem like a cool chick," Ross said.
I choked on my water. It got caught in my throat, and I coughed multiple times before having it resurface in my mouth. I quickly shut my mouth, then swallowed the disgusting mixture of water, saliva, and a bit of my breakfast.
"Are you alright?" Ross asked, rubbing my back lightly. I was still doubled over from my coughing fit, and I honestly did not want to stand back up and look at Ross or show my face ever again.
"I'm fine, thanks," I said quietly. I cleared my throat and then stood up straighter, looking anywhere but at Ross. "I'll, uh, see you around."
And then I left before I could make an even bigger fool of myself.
