Mama sighed and Wayne started texting the family, updating them.
I squirmed in my chair and itched my arm. "Chrys. Stop that." I looked at her. "But it itches Mama." She looked back at me and replied, "I know sweetie, but it'll only make it itch worse." I nodded and sat on my hands.
The local hospitals' ambulance was called to pick me up. Mama wasn't exactly thrilled about that. "Can't we drive her instead of a stupid bill for that be added as well?" Kella shook her head and replied, "It's policy ma'am. We have to make sure that she's safe and treated for her own health. We can't risk you taking her home or anything."
Mama pursed her lips and and nodded curtly. We sat in the waiting room for half an hour, waiting for the ambulance to carry me away.
I was bored, out of my mind. What to do, what to do. I remember i would repeatedly walk to the bathroom, not to use it, but to sing, pass the time.
"And as long as I got my suit and tie. I'ma leave it all on the floor tonight. And you got fixed up to the nines. Let me show you a few things. All pressed up in black and white. And you dressed in that dress I like. Love is swinging in the air tonight. Let me show you a few things. Let me show you a few things"
I was jamming out and couldn't help but sway my hips to the beat as I tried to dance along to my voice. I found myself twirling as the melody played in my head. I lost myself and didn't have to think about which word came next, or which not to hit. It just flowed thru my lips.
"You're really good, you know that?"
I froze and looked up through my hair at Mama. She was smiling and leaning against the door frame. She had pulled back her shortish wavy red hair. My face flushed and I looked down.
"How... long? Were you there?" I asked slowly and awkwardly. Mama laughed and replied, "only a couple minutes. You aren't exactly the quietest singer, you know." I covered my face and groaned as I pushed past her to pout in the waiting room.
I bit my nails and pulled at my ear for the next 15 minutes, and finally the ambulance arrived. I climbed in and laid down on the gurney and answered the medic's questions as I texted my brother, Chaz.
Hey kiddo.
Hey bub.
How u holding up?
Well I'm in the ambulance answering the same questions for probably the 5th time this hour.
I get tht.
Did you take english, Chaz? Your spelling is terrible!
Ur one 2 tlk
I chuckled and set my phone aside. I stared out the back window of the ambulance at the city's beautiful skyline. The buildings glowed shades of green and blue and red. It was in that ambulance, riding to the hospital, that I wondered when I would ever see the city again.
