A/N: The picture put up is Brandon.
"So, what's the plan?"
The plan is simple. Scout the area, set up traps and meet up after. It was what we did every time we had to catch a Supreme. Why do these guys always ask me the same question? It makes me so frustrated.
"The same as always, boys!" I bark.
I lead them out and down the stairs. It wasn't a very far walk since we were only a few minutes away from the facility. We head straight for the weapons room and select our preferred devices. I pick up several knives and strap them to my legs and shoulders. My men copy my actions and select other weapons. Nick picks up two hand guns and hangs them on the specialised belt around his waist. Jason holds out a dart gun which will paralyse and kill its victim slowly. I prefer having my NCM assault rifle, which is specially modified to only paralyse its victim and put it in severe pain, which I like. I attach a hand gun to my waist in case something happens to my other weapons.
"I'll wait outside, boys." I say as I walk out the door.
"YOU GAVE THEM THE WRONG CO-ORDINATES?!" I know that tantrum from anywhere.
"Trent..." I sigh and roll my eyes.
I walk up to his office and knock on the door. I clear my throat, about to ask what was happening. Trent doesn't even turn around or look at me.
"GO AWAY!" He yells. He turns back to his conversation and continues speaking.
"The boys have probably left to find her by now. If the Watergem is not in this area, then where is she?" Trent exclaims.
"She knows the hunters are after her. She's left the state and killed two of the men we had on watch," answers one of our trackers.
"SHE DID WHAT? YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE PEOPLE WATCHING UNTIL MY MEN ARRIVED! LEAVE NOW, YOU COWARD!" Trent slams his fists on the table.
Now, I literally couldn't have helped but overhear this interesting conversation. This could be my chance to kill my first Watergem. Ever since my father killed my mother, I have wanted to kill every last one of those evil things.
I wasn't exactly sure what I'd say yet in order to get Nick and Jason away from her, so I could kill her myself, but I decide to just wing it. I just need to know which state she's in, where she is. I walk away from his office door, not wanting to be seen by the tracker or Trent. How am I going to find out where she is? I'll ask Nick and Jason to distract Trent while I go into his office and look through the papers. He would definitely have her location here somewhere.
"Hey, Nick! Jason! Come here." They run over to me, confused. "I need you two to distract Trent for a few minutes."
"Wait, why?" They both ask in sync.
"It's nothing, I just need some papers. Can't you guys just do it?" I ask, scratching the back of my neck.
"Okay, okay. Just don't be too long. You know how angry Trent gets when you're doing something behind his back," Nick reminds me.
I nod and walk away. They head down the hallway to where we last saw Trent as I run into his office. I go through all of his drawers and come up with nothing. I rummage through his desk. Pens, pencils and other notes, but nothing on the Watergem. I glance up and see a box labeled 'classified'.
That has to be it, I think to myself.
I grab the box and pull open the lid. It contains a full history written on the Watergems, profiles and photos on every Watergem ever found. I stop when a certain picture catches my eye: my dad. It has pictures of him dead on the floor next to my mother. I feel my eyes start to prick with tears, but I press them back. This is no time to get emotional.
"I'm doing this for you, mum. To make it a better place for everyone," I whisper. Watergems are dangerous and must be killed.
I move the picture away and another draws my interest. It was a photo of a girl, and she didn't seem to be much younger than me. I must admit, she was beautiful, especially in this picture. She had long, feathery brown hair that fell softly on her shoulders. Her eyes were a metallic grey, but seemed like they could pass as an odd brown, too. Her lips were the colour of a light pink, shaped in delicate curves.
I wonder who could take such a photo, filled to the brim with absolute beauty. But it doesn't matter.
It doesn't matter because this is definitely her: the Watergem I have to kill. This could be one of my hardest missions yet. I just have to find her and get it over with. I look through the documents behind it. It has her name, abilities, strengths and weaknesses. I grab the paper and head for the door, but I suddenly hear Trent and stop. His footsteps get closer and closer. He would kill me if he found me in his office. I make my way over to the wall beside the door, so that when he opens it I would be behind it, and squeeze my eyes shut, not wanting to see his face when he sees me. I hear him grab the doorknob from the other side and turn it.
"Wait! Wait!" I could hear Nick on the other side of the door. "I didn't tell you the best part!"
"I don't bloody care, Nick. Go away!"
No, no, no, no, no.
He's never going to trust me again. All of a sudden, I hear a quicker and louder pair of footsteps coming towards us, as if someone was running up the corridor.
"I'm sorry, Trent, but it's urgent," says a man. "A hunter is down and he's badly injured, says he has to tell you something."
"I have to go, boys." Trent tells the two, somewhat in relief, it sounds like.
I hear Trent leave and both of the boys appear at the now open door. Their eyes go straight to the document in my hand. I give them a look and walk off. It was a bit harsh, but I couldn't tell them here. Without a word, they follow me all the way back to my apartment. I turn around and sigh.
"Get in," I gesture to the door.
"What the hell was that all about, Brandon? You could have gotten in deep shit or even lost your job." Nick exclaimed.
"Look, neither you nor Jason saw any of that. You little rookies are not going to go telling Trent or whoever else that I went in there, got it? Rat me out to anyone and you'll wish you never got this job." I try my hardest to sound intimidating, but usually I'm not that kind of person. Luckily, since both Jason and Nick came recently, they don't know that.
They nod quickly, and that's how I know I've done it. I mean, I feel kind of bad, but what was I supposed to do? I have to kill this Watergem myself, I just need to.
"So, uh, what's happening now?" Jason asks, admittedly seeming a little nervous.
"You two are going to go ahead to the where the Watergem is. I'll meet you there in a day or so, I have my own shit to do," I instruct. This has obviously got their attention.
"Wait, you're letting us go after the Watergem by ourselves?" Both boys look absolutely shocked. "Is that not against some type of rule? We've been in training for a little under a year, are you sure?"
"Oh yeah, you two are capable enough. Put the blame on Trent if something happens, since he was so sure on letting you guys on the mission anyway." I hope it sounds like I trust them on this, that's the aim.
"Definitely, Jason and I have this! We'll find and kill her in record time, you can count on it." Nick becomes excited far too quickly, and I almost feel guilty enough to tell them the truth. Almost.
"You two should head off, get a good head start." I suggest, trying to sound helpful, but really, I just want them gone already.
They file out the door, a definite bounce in their steps as they still haven't realised the dirty truth. They could get seriously hurt, and all I cared about was my revenge. It makes me sound like a horrible person, I know, but after 8 years full of hatred and wait for the opportunity, I'm not going to pass this up. I have to kill her, I have to.
I sit at the table and look through the documents. I take the girls photo off the front and begin to read her profile.
