When creating an OC in a magical world, it's important to have a magical power. Now, as I've already stated, it does NOT have to be Dragon Slayer magic.
I personally admire Celestial magic or Enchantments. I feel like those are unique and strong but keep your OC from being too overpowered.
Overpowered OCs are my biggest pet peeve when reading a fanfiction. If your OC is able to defeat Erza in one hit, you might want to tone it down a bit. Overpowering your character gives your story an unrealistic feel and eliminates opportunities to develop a good plot.
It's fine to have a powerful character, but remember that Fairy Tail is full of powerful characters and none of which should be easily defeated in a matter of seconds. Keep your OC's strength at a realistic level.
Also, if using your own magic that you made up, feel free to go nuts with it. Make it strong without making it overpowered. Make it noble like Erza's. Make it powerful like Jellal's. Make it cute like Lisanna's. Whatever you want, do it. Just be creative!
