[2] CALUM HOOD
February 16, 2015
Calum rushed into the gallery, closing his umbrella. He thanked God, or whoever is up there, that he brought an umbrella that day. He walked up to the first painting, and adored the colors and how they contrasted. You see, Calum isn't very creative. That's really the whole reason why he came to the art gallery. He has a really huge art project coming up that would be more than half of his grade. "You must draw a portrait, and it cannot be of yourself. It doesn't have to be the traditional draw then paint. You can do scribble line drawings, a cartoon, anything, and if you'd like you can do the traditional way as well." His art teacher's voice rang in his head since earlier that day. Calum really needed some inspiration.
He took a few notes and wrote down a few suggestions on what he wanted to do, until he came upon something that really caught his eye: one of those continuous line drawings, which was one of the few exercises that his art teacher made him do. He wrote it down onto his notepad, drawing a little star beside it. Step-by-step, he slowly made his way throughout the paintings, putting down little notes as he went by.
He looked around at all of the paintings, and paused for a second or two. His gaze was locked on a silhouette of a girl. She wasn't very tall, had a slim build and she had her hair tucked behind her ear. Calum repeatedly tried to get closer to her to see her face, but couldn't do so without looking like a creep. She wore a nude coat over her shoulders and a grey dress that stopped at the middle of her thighs, and held her handbag that was nude as well. He looked at the way she admired the artwork. The way she looked at the painting was the way he looked at her. At this point, he stopped paying attention to the paintings, but kept his eyes on her. He thought that she was the real masterpiece.
The quiet room's silence was interrupted by a phone ringing. "Oops." She mumbled under her breath.
"Hello?" Her sweet voice greeted.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, I'll wait for you here."
"Bye."
Calum watched as she sauntered towards the lounge area, her heels clicking along the floor. He followed her to see her sitting down with a cup of coffee, scrolling on her phone.
"Is it okay if I sit here?" He said, standing by the couch across from her.
"Oh, of course," she smiled.
He took a seat and analyzed her face for a second before realizing that it was the girl with the olive skin. He hasn't seen this girl for years, and he was only half-glad to have seen her. She was the first girl he had felt love with, after all. This time, her makeup looked even prettier. Her hair looked healthier and lighter. Her lips were as plump as ever, and her cheeks were a soft pink. He flipped to a page on his notepad and began to draw her features, not picking up the pencil. He drew her long hair, and the way that she crossed her legs. While he was so focused on his drawing, the girl with the olive skin muttered, "You grew up well, Calum."
He looked up at her for a second, and without saying a word, he continued on with his work. She grinned as he concentrated on his work. She took out her nude lipstick out of her purse, applying it to her lips generously. She took her napkin and blotted her lipstick on it, leaving a stain. Calum watched as she began to write something on it with her lipstick. She got up without a word, taking her coffee, but leaving the napkin. Before saying anything, thinking that he lost her again, he looked at the napkin.
'-Lily', it read at the bottom.
The boy with the blonde streak in his hair went home, and a huge smile spread across his face. Lily. Her name was like a melody to him. This was the first time that he has ever been so excited to have learned someone's name. He stayed up all night drawing her, and wrote her name at the bottom in cursive.
The girl with the olive skin went home, and began to think about the boy with the blonde streak in his hair. She stayed up all night drawing him, smiling to herself.
