[1] CALUM HOOD
October 13, 2010
CALUM WAS A pure boy in year 8 who didn't know a thing about love. The only "I love you"'s he has ever said were to his parents, his sister, and a childhood dog. He has never had any type of attraction towards the opposite sex; he only thought of them as gross and annoying. He hasn't had any firsts: no first kiss, no first girlfriend, no first love. All of his friends—who are already starting to get into alcohol, drugs, and sex—called him lame 'cos he still didn't hit that 'teenage rebellion stage'. Calum had some girl friends, but never once did his heart start beating faster than normal, and never once did he get that funny feeling in his stomach like his friends described. He never felt love until he saw her.
She was the new girl who every girl wanted to be friends with and every guy fancied. She was pretty, sweet, and talented. Calum wasn't the type to get in with the crowd and just focused on himself. He only got a little glance of her once before he knew that she actually sat a seat diagonally away from him in English. He sat behind her so he had quite a good view of her. While she did her work, Calum strayed away from his own work and focused on her. It was like time stood still when he looked at her. He looked at the way she would always keep her hair tucked behind her ear, and when she was really concentrated on something she would pout her lips a bit to the side.
Her complexion was fair; her cheeks slightly tinted with rose and her clear skin was a light olive. He could barely see her eyes, but they were a nice brown outlined a shade darker. He thought that she was very beautiful, and, even though he thought this was a bit cliché, not just on the outside. He never got the chance to talk to her but when she talked to others, she was very polite. She always smiled brightly, and from what he has seen she is always happy.
"Have you talked to the new girl?" A hoarse voice spoke, putting an arm around Calum, startling him. He looked up to see a familiar blond boy smiling: his best friend, Luke.
"No, and I'm not planning to anytime soon."
"What? No way," Luke scoffed. "Don't you think she's hot?"
"Well, yeah, but do you not see all of the other guys trying to talk to her too?" Calum said with a hint of disappointment in his voice, looking over at the 3 boys surrounding her desk.
"That's why you need to be unique, Cal, be memorable."
"What do you expect? Do you want me to give her a stick of butter and say 'You butter go out with me!'? Plus, I haven't even asked out a girl before."
"I'm not saying you should ask her out, I'm saying you should talk to her."
"This is a girl were talking about! How?"
"I don't know, just come up to her. Don't pussy out or she'll think you're weird," Luke rushed, leaving before the teacher could scold him for being out of his seat.
By the time class ended, Calum was determined to say something to this girl before the end of the day. He saw her standing by her locker, the only moment he's seen her without everyone else crowding around her, and his heartbeat began to pick up the pace. He started fiddling with his fingers for a moment before he took small steps towards her. She was too focused on putting her books away to notice but Calum stood there for a second. So many words ran through his mind, causing him to panic a little. He felt as if a million galaxies could slip out of his mouth before choking out the words, "Hey, you're new, right?"
A smile stretched across her face. "Yeah, actually—"
This was the first time he heard her voice. It was soft, soothing. Calum's face instantly lit up (he was mostly glad that he didn't make a fool out of himself in front of the prettiest girl he has seen) until the new girl was pulled away by another girl in his class, saying, "Hey! We need you over here."
They began to walk away, and she looked back and mouthed the word, "Sorry."
He felt quite disappointed, feeling as though that he blew his only chance, considering that he's one in the many people who want to get to know her. She was like a shooting star, he only got one good look at her while everyone else wished for her. Calum was quite happy that he mustered up the courage to talk to this girl. It didn't feel like any other old girl. He looked at her one last time before he began to feel these weird feelings. His stomach felt like it was twisting in a thousand knots, his muscles were all tensed up, and his heart was going a million miles an hour. It was a foreign feeling that he's never experienced before. It felt like what his friends always described to him was really happening. This pubescent lad realized that what he's feeling, or what he was starting to feel towards this olive skinned girl, is love.
But he never got her name.
